PR - great beach, pool, gym

Where in Puerto Rico can we get all the above as well as a quiet non-party atmosphere and excellent service? Not concerned about price. If possible, would like someplace that doesn't require too much traveling once we get to San Juan airport. Need good swimming & workout facilities. Thanks in advance.

Have you looked at the Ritz Carlton in San Juan? It's less than 10 minutes from the airport.

The Marriot in Condado also has a good gym, but the pool and beach at the Ritz-Carlton is much superior. It also has a great spa.

The one advantage of being in Condado is that it is much easier to walk to many different restaurants. There's also a Starbucks directly across from teh Marriott, if that's of any interest to you. And Condado is closer to Old San Juan.

Ritz Carlton sounds like the perfect place. I'm a little concerned because I found a huge number of recent reviews complaining about the horrible service there, saying it's hard to believe it's a Ritz property. Still not ruling it out.

Marriott in Condado has a quiet atmosphere? Hard to believe but I'll look into it, too.

Also would be willing to take a short flight from San Juan to another location, even another island, as long as it doesn't require a lot of waiting and the flight is no more than half an hour or so. (We do this often from Montego Bay.) Have looked into Vieques for this reason but we want to stay put in one place for the week and Vieques seems to require daily traveling for a good beach.

I am not sure why there would be a large number of negative reviews of the Ritz Carlton based on poor service. I have been there a number of times, the most recent being this past August, and have always found the service to be very good.

I know that some people complain about its proximity to the airport and it is true that when you are on the beach you can hear the planes taking off. You really can't hear it much from the pool and the rooms are soundproofed. Another knock on it is that very few rooms have balconies.

That said, it seems to fit with what you are looking for - other than the casino, it is a quiet atmosphere, the pool area is very nice and it is on a good stretch of beach. The gym and spa are by the pool area. I never had a spa treatment there but the gym is decent sized for a hotel and has all the standard equipment.

I just read your second posting, which leads me to believe that you are looking for someplace that is somewhat secluded. If so, San Juan might not be for you after all. Although the Ritz Carlton is a pretty quiet hotel, the surrounding area is busy and pretty congested.

No, the Marriott doesn't have a quiet atmosphere. Quite the opposite, in fact, in the lobby. I was just telling you about the gym.

The hotel in Puerto Rico that best meets your needs is the Horned Dorset Primavera in Rincon. You can fly directly into Aguadilla on Continental nonstop from EWR, and you'll be perhaps 1/2 hour from the hotel. It's the best and most luxurious hotel on the island.

There is no true luxury resort on Vieques. If you are looking beyond PR, I like the Buccaneer on St. Croix or the Ritz-Carlton on St. Thomas. Both of these are within 1/2 hour of Puerto Rico. You could also go to Caneel Bay on St. John.
