Gallows Point, St. John
 

Has anyone stayed at Gallows Point on St. John recently? What are the nicest beaches there to visit? Thanks.

Amie, <BR> <BR>I just returned from STT and we did a tour of the beaches in STJ. I was so impressed by the many beaches on the island. My favorites were Hawksnest and Trunk Bay. I snorkeled in Trunk Bay and it was some of the most beautiful snorkeling I have done. <BR> <BR>By the way, Gallows Point looks impressive from the ferry. I would love to know what you think of it if you stay there. Not much of a beach there but there are so many wonderful beaches on the island that you need to explore.

My fiance and I stayed at Gallows Point in May and absolutely loved it. we had an oceanfront garden room which was siply but tastefully decorated, a wonderful patio with a stunning view of St Thomas and sunsets. It was exquisetly clean, the snorkling off and around the point was great and the front desk could not have been more helpful. I have heard that there is significantly more noise in the harborfront rooms which floats in from town. I cannot attest to that since we were oceanfront - however I could see how it might happen. The rooms are VERY open and do let a lot of sound in. However the guests are respectful and the security enforces the all quiet at 900 rule. Please feel free to email me with any questions. Total Ditto of the above message! Stayed over Memorial and loved it. Lavender Hill (just above) is also cheaper and almost as lovely. TAKE YOUR SNORKELING GEAR. Lots of neat fish (25lb puffer fish!) and neat stuff at both the above beaches. If it rains, make sure to visit Trunk Bay afterwards (or at 5 pm) after the crowds are gone. We snorkeled the reef and were amazed at the foot-long angel fish and our biggest fish I've ever seen (mild mannered and harmless big silver fish, maybe 75 lbs!)

Gallows Point is a beautiful, centrally-located resort. It has a good restaurant too, Ellington's. The pool and grounds are well kept and offers a nice view of the sea. I preferred Gallows Point to the Westin Resort. St. John's has some of the best beaches in the Caribbean, Trunk Bay being the most photographed. Snorkeling is incredible, as well as hiking (bring proper shoes). Dining on St. John's is great too. I recommend Paradiso and Morgan's Mango.

Each beach on St. John (no "s" please! unless you are on Antigua) has very unique qualities ... some of my favorite are Salt Cay, Waterlemon, Francis, Hawksnest, Salomon, Honeymoon ... could name just about all of 'em! I avoid both Trunk and Cinnamon due to the flotilla of cruise ships that bring the pax there (and why pay when there are so many wonderful ones right around the bend! Do pack and use a small cooler for your treks so you can choose which is your favorite. Gerald Singer's St. John, Off the Beaten Path and St. John Beach Guide are still popular books to use when plotting your trips on St. John.
