Gallows Point on St. John?

We have been investigating a number of different options for lodging on St. John and most recently we've been thinking seriously about Gallows Point Resort. Can anyone provide information good or bad about this property? Also, which of the two management companies is the better to utilize, or are they the same? I believe Suite St. John is more expensive, than Gallows Point Management, but the reason for this is not completely clear to me. Any recommendations on which specific unit to request? We're leaning toward OceanFront (since we've heard the HarborView can be noisy) and would like to be close enough to the waterfront that we can hear the waves. Is there much of a view from units on the lower level? Any other info or tips would be greatly appreciated!

My husband & I stayed at Gallows Point last July and it was great! We stayed in Unit 6-A which is a oceanview unit on the ground floor. The view was absolutely beautiful. We rented from Gallows Point Management. I understand from reading on some other boards that Suite St. John have installed central A/C in their units and that Gallows Point Management will have central air in their units by the end of summer. Unit 6-A had A/C in the bedroom only, which I thought was great........ at night you could hear the water breaking on the rocks at the water's edge while in the main living area but could also be cool while you slept. The only drawback was the late night noise coming from Ellington's (the eating establishment at Gallows Point). The first couple of nights it kept us awake, but we did get accustomed to it.

Gallows Point is a great place and I think that you would enjoy your stay there. Hope this has been helpful! Have a Great Time!

Thanks--this is very helpful. But can anyone advise RE: a spot to minimize noise from both Ellingtons and the Harbor? I can't really tell from the map where the restaurant is located. We didn't particularly want to be right next to the pool either. Have I pretty much eliminated the whole resort? We don't mind a little noise at night if the a/c will cover, but obviously would prefer to minimize. Thanks

Hi Mike,

Under normal circumstances, there is no noise problem from Ellington's past 9 or 10 pm at night. We like to stay in Building #1 which is the farthest from town and a good distance from the restaurant. It is very quiet there and the views are stunning. One night last June during our week long stay there, a local civic club held it monthly meeting in the upper level of the restaurant after it had closed to the public. Since it was just before the 4th of July, they sang several patriotic songs which we could hear in our downstairs suite but not in our bedroom above the sound of the AC unit. Their website (http://www.gallowspointresort.com) has a map that shows where the restaurant is. It is located directly above the main lobby and check-in. In the photo of the resort on the homepage, Ellington's is where the blue awning is. Building #1 is to the far right.

We have stayed there using both Suite St. John and the Gallows Point management company. They both do an excellent job. The main reason for the price difference now is the central AC in the Suite St. John units. I would give a slight edge to the GP management staff as far as service, but only slightly. Suite St. John only represents 8 units there and only 1 of them is a downstairs unit (harborview). It is a wonderful place to stay. You can read my trip report about our stay there last June by going to http://virginislandsnow.homestead.co...0vacation.html .

Regards,
Ray

Buildings 1, 2, and 3 are at the point with the most distance from the harbor and Ellington's. I know that harbor noise would not be a problem there but I'm unsure about the noise from Ellington's. These units are also at the opposite side of the resort from the pool. The noise didn't bother us enough to discourage a second visit....we will be staying there again in a couple of weeks. :)

We stayed in the (downstairs) #2 garden unit (close to the restaurant) and although it did not keep us up at night, it was rather noisey in the a.m. I absolutely would go back and stay in the same accommodations again, however, for the privacy of our patio and the view. American Airlines had a package deal (fly-stay) which offerred this unit. Keep in mind that the bugs will be biting during the summer months. There are no screens on the windows - only shutters. Have a great time!
