Frederiksted v. Christiansted on St. Croix

My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to St. Croix in late March. Can anyone offer advice as to where on the island we should stay. We want to be on a beach, but one with restaurants and bars nearby. Can anyone offer any insight as to either of the two places?

Hi Jack,

St. Croix is a lovely island which is under-rated by many people. This island has historic sites, shopping, a rainforest, a casino, and good beaches. Don't miss taking a day trip to Buck Island if you like to snorkel.

Frederiksted is a quaint place with some historic sites in it and nearby but does not have any hotels/resorts on a beach and not much in the way of nightlife or restaurant choices. The Botanical Gardens and the Whim Plantation which are a little east of town add to the reasons this would make an excellent choice for a day trip.

Christiansted has most of the restaurants, nightclubs, and shops on the island. There are a few decent hotels in town, but the best places to stay which are on the beach but close to town are just a few miles east of Christiansted. Some people like Chenay Bay Beach Resort while other like the Tamarind Reef Hotel. But the biggest and most popular resort on St. Croix is the Buccaneer Hotel. In my opinion, it is fabulous. It has an 18 hole golf course, several tennis courts, 2 swimming pools, 3 excellent beaches, excellent restaurants, and nicely furnished accommodations spread out over 300 lush tropical acres. If you don't want to hike to the different places at the resort, they offer a complimentary shuttle service. There are better resorts in the Caribbean, but none which are more professionally managed than this one is by the Armstrong family which still owns and operates the place after over 50 years of being in business there. Check it out at http://www.thebuccaneer.com. Two other websites that may prove useful in planning your trip are http://www.st-croix.com and http://www.usvi.net/usvi/stx.html.

Regards, Ray

Have been to STX many times and I have to agree with Ray. C'sted is the place to stay. The Buccaner is wonderful, but I can't say I'd recommend Chenay Bay. If you can swing it, stay ocean front at the Buc! Awesome!
