YOU CANNOT LOOSE WITH THE FOUR SEASONS NEVIS. BEST IN CARRIBEAN!!!! (I say that in spite of the fact that Nevis is not my favorite island). I have stayed at 4 seasons Nevis and must stay away for fear that the pampering at the resort will make me loose taste for my favorite places.

That said. I agree with previous post. Fly into Nevis directly unless you are planning on spending a few days in St. Kitt's prior.

Great trip report Greenie. We, too, were relieved to have chosen the FS on Nevis. The best money we spent at the FS was down at Mango's. They had the best food of all the restaurants on the grounds and the view was incredible. When we were there in February, Banana's was not in their new location yet. You were fortunate to have been able to visit them there. Like you, we reached out to the idea of the Hermitage idea, but found the serice to be lacking. When I initially called the FS, they were surprised to hear that we were planning on using it as a base as many people that visit never leave the resort, but rather choose to just stay and relax. Which is why you felt like you did a lot of legwork. They are not used to independent guests, although as you indicated, they will go out of there way for you. I'm so glad you had such a great time. It is a very special place. Hope you make it back again after the baby comes.

Alwaysvacationing; I agree with everything said about FS-Nevis. But, for a change of pace if you are not looking for another paradise or two that has limited activities for children you might want to consider Jumby Bay. We are going to Biras Creek in December and hope it is like Jumby. Our kids are out of the house and quiet relaxing environments with good snorkeling and great food are our interest at this time. You might want to consider in the future.

StanKase, Please write a trip report about Biras when you get back as we are going in May. Keep note of the best snorkeling spots. Have you been to VG before? Thanks, Owa

Owa; We have been to Little Dix 3 times in 1992, 1998 and 2001. We have not returned primarily because they now offer as does Caneel (both Starwood managed properties) a well run Kids Camp. But now we want quieter surroundings. We also went on a Windstar cruise that stoped at Virgin Gorda for a day and went snorkeling. But, having been to the Baths twice we took another snorkel offering that was not very good even thoughj I understand from many friends and travelers that there are 7-8 spots within 4-5 miles of Virgin Gorda. In fact, as an aside, all the Windstar snorkel trips were a bust except 1 from Tortola. We took the 7 day cruise primarily to go snorkeling every day and were very disappointed. The 440 ft. sailboat is 18 years old, though very well maintained, and the food was good to very good. We are NOT cruise-people but took this one for the ease of snorkel opprtunities and "came away" wanting.

StanKase, My husband would love to sail around in the BVI's, but if I'm on a boat for a few days, I sway for many days after I get on ground. Not fun.

Anyhow, have you been to Monkey Point and Diamond Reef? How about snorkeling around Aneganda? We are going to be on Tortola for four nights before we go to Biar Creek, and plan to take day trips from there. We have only driven from one end of Tortola to the other to get to Peter Island's ferry. Don't know what to expect on Tortola. I seem to remember that you are not wild about snorkeling in Bonaire. We are going to try it at the end of the month. Owa

I have been to Monkey and it was very good but not great. From Tortola, Roadtown, I think, you can get a 1/2 day sail to Jost Van Dyke and snorkel. It is quite good but make sure they go to 2 spots for 45 minutes at each spot. The trip to Anegada will be about 2 hours RT shorter if you wait and go from Biras Creek and likely cost a bit less. You are correct we were not impressed with Bonaire for snorkeling. It is o'k but the WEST END of Curacao is much better, in our opinion. Bonaire like Grand Cayman are first rate for diving in 40-70 ft. depths. If you get an early ferry to Peter Island and make advanced arrangements with PI watersports they offer a very good snorkel trip around Peter Island. But, bring a change of clothes for trip back on the ferry. A cocktail at PI before leaving is pleasant. We stayed at PI 3-4 years ago and enjoyed it but it was a "little stuffy" for us. But it is beautiful property. The food was very good but too many buffets for lunch and several for dinner in our 8 night stay. Just for future reference.

I know that this is a late reply to Jo-Lee but... Why would anyone NOT want the Four Seasons to pick them up at the St. Kitts airport, walk them through customs, sign them in at the airport and give them their rooms assignments, taxi them to the dock and take them on the best motor launches in the Federation for the 30 minute cruise to Nevis? A cold mint or lemon scented towel, Rum Punch, Perrier and Fruit punch are available at no charge during your boat ride. Your luggage will appear in your room within minutes of your arrival at the resort. $95.00 is cheap for the service they offer. The resort advertises a no-tipping policy so the tipping problem is mute. One thing that all of the posters who suggest other hotels on Nevis forget to mention is that the Four Seasons takes care of you from the luggage claim carousel to your room and back. The other resort do not offer this service. You are on your own until you arrive on Nevis. FYI: if you fly into Nevis the 4S meets and greets you at the airport and transports you and your luggage to the resort. Luggage is transported in a non-passenger van. Eating off the resort will not save you money. Whether you dine at the 4S or Montpellier, Mount Nevis, The Hermitage or Bananas, the average cost of a dinner is going to be the same: $45.00 U.S. per person (drinks not included). The resort offer food plans like those that are popular in Europe. Check them out. And yes, the cost of things, including food, is more expensive on Nevis than a mainland resort because it costs more to get the food there. The 4S has it's own supply boat from Fort Lauderdale Fl. that comes in weekly. The other hotels rely on Ram's purveyor's to import their foodstuff, therefore adding a middleman to the cost. If you've ever done the grocery store search on Nevis you will know the limitations of quality foodstuffs available on the island.
Another cost-cutting but time wasting idea is getting a rental car through a source outside the 4S. Either the resort arranges everything for you or you have to arrange everything for yourself including, but not limited to, a visitor's driver's license.
If you are going to stay at the 4S then don't scrimp on you luxury. Let them treat you like you think you deserve to be treated. The new spa, and the golf do have fees but, as anyone who pays green fees here in the States will tell you, they're not out of line.
Having said all these nice things about 4S, I will echo some of the thoughts on Nesbit's. It's a wonderfuly laidback experience and has an old Caribbean influence. The Hermitage is a private paradise in the chattel-house and hammock vein, and their cooks can make anything taste good. Old Manor is second tier but not bad. Montpellier (and from the postings I'm going to get flack on this) is isolated, boring and overrated. But I've been a snowbird to Nevis for 10 years so I'm jaded.
The Four Seasons and Nesbits are the only two on the beach, The others are mountain hideaways.

Chiming here late - again

If anyone appreciates the service that FS's offer then - Why would you not enjoy the attention that basically at the end of the day you are paying for?

Rent a car (cheapest place you can find) - it's a small island we did it in twice in one day but will book a car again in June when we revisit Nevis because we like the freedom to explore and have lunch out, in which case you might want to research other restaurants and their menus to find a couple of local bargain meals while you're there.

Why would you want to only eat at FS's? at least walk along the beach and try Sunshines and the Pavilions.

Don't forget that FS's is a worldwide company but most Nevis restaurants are one-offs, please support the local companies while you are on the island.

Nevisian - it's probably a typo but the resort is called NISBET not NESBIT.

Wasn't he the guy from the Monkee's??
