Food in St. Maarten/St. Martin
 

Hi,
We are going with friends to their time share in mid-July. Is food at the supermarket expensive compared to US? Grand Cayman? Bermuda? If we bring some food, suggestions appreciated. We plan on eating breakfast and lunch at the unit or on the beach. Thanks

food at the supermarkets here is not so expensive. It might be slightly higher than the USA but most items are comparable in price.
we are a duty free island so there are no import fees.
I would imagine that Grand Cayman and Bermuda are much more expensive.

It's really not necessary to bring food becaue you can buy just about everything here.
some visitors bring certain favorite foods but most just buy what they want at the supermarket when they get here.
The best supermarket on the island is Le Grand Marche right outside of Philipsburg. It is very well stocked.
there also is a place called Cost U Less right around the corner. It's like a Costco and they have some very reasonable prices on food.

We just returned from St. Maarten and found that the food at the grocery store there was not more expensive than at home in the US. We didn't bring anything but coffee, however the coffee there is very good. We even found items there like Boathouse Soy Protein Drink that I did not expect to find but couldn't take with me on the trip. My only suggestion would be to catch a great lunch before you go grocery shopping. There are soooo many great places to eat, especially on the French side of the island. If you are coming from the airport on the Dutch side, stop off at Lee's Roadside Grill. We ate there before going home and it was one of the best meals we had. Fresh Mahi and Wahoo was delicious! And the portions are very large! Have a great time!

I just remembered something else...be sure and get some of the wonderful cheeses at the grocery. They are great to snack on with crackers during the day. Maybe a little wine too. We had great luck at Vinissimo, a wine store with great french wines at great prices. One thing I would recommend, take plenty of cash. Alot of the stores discouraged using a credit card if you were making less than a $25 purchase and alot of the beach restaurants/bars don't take anything but cash!!! Enjoy!

good Dutch cheese is a must. take some back home too for all your friends.

I agree. I always take some Dutch cheese home to family in the US. It's so "gouda!" :)
