First time to Nassau - Safe to take taxi?

My husband and I are staying in Nassau for 5 days with a planned group. We want to see the sights on our own. Is is safe to take a taxi to tour the island - or is it recommended to rent a car? Many thanks.

We've never had a problem with taxi's in Nassau. There are actual tour services available through most of the hotels as well. If you don't know your way around very well, I would suggest getting help instead of renting a car. It's pretty easy to get lost and there is a lot to see if done right. Have fun!

I wouldn't rent a car. If you can take advantage of the tours that the hotel offers, that would be good. There is very cheap bus service around the island too.

Be careful with taxi's in Nassau! Had a terrible experience, and will never return to the island because of it.

Do they still have those big, old Caddys and Lincolns as taxis there?

The jitneys are the best way to get around the island during the day, because of the traffic. Much less expensive and they run all day until 6pm.

Cabs are the only option in the evening and you really won't have a problem.
When you get in ask the driver what the fare will be so you won't have any problems.

To vacationd, one cab ride and you would not return!!! GEEEZ don't ever come to New York then EVERY cab ride here is an adventure!!

If you're staying in the Cable Beach area the bus is THE way to go during the day. The worse thing about the taxi is that is can get expensive but safety is not an issue.
