First time solo - the Bahamas

Hello,

I'm heading to the Bahamas solo for a week next April. Planning on 4 days fly fishing for Bonefish on Abaco Island. I've already booked a fishing guide and rented a cottage on the beach...plenty of remote R&R there! I'm trying to decide if I should hold over a few days in Nassau either on my way to, or way back from Abaco? Any suggestions for a single male traveler in Nassau? Looking to have a few days upscale at hotel, sailing, dining and chilling. Is Nassau even worth spending time there or just catch my connecting flights and move on?

Thank you for feedback and suggestions.

I can't answer your question about suggestions, however, as a solo traveler I just want to make you aware that the Bahamas (Nassau in particular) has a significant crime problem according to what I have read. St. Martin seems to get a lot of crime attention on this forum (and I still vacation there btw so I understand all crime reports have to be taken in a larger context of the destination) but knowing about this might be helpful so you can make an informed decision.

Sorry, I meant to say read the safety and security section on the above link. I will also say, many people I know travel to the Bahamas and never have any problem but better to be aware than not.

Sailing is much better in Abacos, so just add nights to Abacos.

If you want to chill in New Orovidence, stay a couple of nights at Compass Point Resirt in Nassau-- it's about 20 minutes to town, 30 to Atlantas (which while crazy, worth seeing once). Before you reach downtown there's a colorful permanent fish fry area Thisbe cool.

Or for something completely different, try the new Baha Mar. It's huge, but upscale, they'll be having a soft opening by then.

I realize that Baha Mar and Atlantis are completely different from what you're looking for, but really the "essence" of New Providence and Paradise Island.

If you decide to stay over on Nassau, I personally would do 2 day trips from there, either to Harbour Island or Exumas (or both). Both sound more your style, and personally I love them more than Abacos for the beaches.

As for fishing-- Exumas and Bimini are the fishing Out Islands. Abacos are sailing. Harbour Island is chic. Exumas have the most amazing beaches. (my opinions of course)

Where are you fishing in the Abacos? Depending on that answer, I have suggestions for you on where to head afterwards- love Abaco.
