First Family Trip to Puerto Rico
 

Family of five (4 are over 21, 1 is 20), looking for a nice beach, lots of good restaurants, casinos, shopping, not too far from the San Juan airport.
Plan to rent a condo for a week in the summer. It is necessary that we go in the summer, which summer month would be best?
Would really appreciate any input, always get such good advice on this site.

Look at either the Isla Verde or Condado areas. Isla Verde has the best beach in the San Juan area and has a lot of condos (although I don't know how many are owner occupied and how many are for rentals). I have been to Puerto Rico in June, July and August and haven't found that the weather varies much in those months. It will be hot, humid but usually with a decent breeze. Expect periods of showers on any given day but usually not a wash out. I try to go early summer just because it is earlier in the hurricane season and not as many storms develop versus later summer.

I feel the rain forest-El Yunque_ is a must do. A day at Luquillo beach could tie in with a trip to the rain forest.

There are a lot of good restaurants in San Juan.

In the Isla Verde area, if you are looking for reasonably priced PR/Cuban food, a good choice is Metropol. The smoked chicken is soooooo good. Also, the cornish hen is very good (stuffed with black beans and rice). For more expensive dining, the restaurants in El San Juan are usually a good bet (and if you go on the weekend, the hotel lobby will be a fun place to hang out - live music, dancing, casino)

In Condado area, I like Ajilli Mojilli (latin food). Also in Condado is Ropa Vieja (latin food), which many people seem to like, although I have mixed feelings about it - it is a little inconsistent.

In Old San Juan, I like the Parrot Club (latin food), Aquaviva (seafood) and Dragonfly (latin-asian fusion).

You should definitely get down to Old San Juan to explore and see the forts. However, it does get pretty hot walking around in the summertime, so I suggest you go fairly early in the morning. You can always go back for dinner another night. I just find it hard to explore there and go out to dinner in the same visit. First, you will be a sweaty mess and second, your "exploring" clothes would probably not be appropriate for dinner.
