We have been to Aruba in August. July and February. There was very little difference weather-wise; February was just slightly cooler. You should realize that Aruba is so far south that the difference between summer and winter is very slight. We love the climate whatever the time of year - the wonderful breeze always makes it bearable!

If you want to go AI in Negril, I would definitely look at Couples Swept Away - have been there twice and loved it. For non AI, look at wwww.moondancevillas.com and www.idleawhile.com. Idle Awhile owned by same family as Swept Away. You may also like staying on the cliffs. Look at The Caves - found at www.islandoutpost.com.

Hi honeymooner14. I just returned from my second trip to Negril yesterday.... stayed at Sandals Negril. I mainly stayed at an AI for this trip due to my short stay (3 nights, It makes things easier....)

Are you wanting to stay in Negril, do you want beach or cliffs? Most (not all, of 7-mile beach is large AI resorts. Most of the non-AI's are on the far end of the beach towards the point, or on the cliffs.'

Both have their pros/cons.

We either want to do Negril or Ocho Rios because they seem to be pretty lush, which, if we decide to go there, would be a selling point after the wedding in Grand Cayman. We would probably stay on the beach in Negril. Has anyone stayed at Idle Away that could offer me opinions?

How about changing locations on Grand Cayman for the second week? You could move to one of the resorts on the East End of Grand Cayman, for example, for a completely different feel and experience from Seven Mile Beach.

Particularly with a wedding scheduled, the 2 weeks will pass all-too quickly. I think you'd be happier staying on one island.

Believe me, I know what you're saying, but we have our minds made up to stay on 2 islands.

Two things. Regarding a previous post, 7 mile beach is not mostly AI's. I've been there several times, and there are only a couple of AI's on all of Grand Cayman. Also, I don't know what "cliffs" the poster is refering to. Are you sure you are talking about 7 mile beach???

Regarding staying on 2 islands, why not switch to one of the other Cayman islands? They are like night and day, and it would save you travel time and $. (some people think pure vanity makes people "island hop", not getting the most rest & relaxation out of a wedding & honeymoon)

The poster was talking about Jamaica there, not Grand Cayman.

anonx was referring to Negril, Jamaica's 7 mile beach and actually, there are only a handful of AIs on that, towards Bloody Bay - most of the hotels/cottages/villas/guesthouses are not AI.

I was actually referring to the section where you have Riu, Couples, Grand Lido, Hedo, Sandals Negril, Beaches Sandy Bay, Beaches Negril, and Swept Away all in a row on Negril's Seven Mile Beach....

We stayed at Couples, Ocho Rios, but it was some years back. Two couples, 4 of us, stayed in a villa on the beach which was nice but I won't call if plush. We were there the middle of September, shortly after a hurricane had hit the island. The upside: nice beach, nice weather, climbing Dunns River Falls was the highlight for us (it was a blast!). The four of us also paid to have a driver take us an hour or more away from the resort to a place where you go on a bamboo type raft and a river captian takes you on an afternoon boating ride where you stop to swim and have lunch. Downside: We all got sick from the drinking water, two of us got very sick for a few days. Except for the resorts Jamaica is very poverty stricken and if you go outside the resort you may see things you've never seen before, I did. My husband and I won't go back but the resorts are nice. I say go to Hawaii and get married, Maui. I loved Hawaii and want to go back sooo bad. This winter we are going to GC for the first time. But planning on a trip to Hawaii in the future. Whatever you do, remember this is your wedding day and honeymoon so no matter where you are it will be wonderful!!

Thanks! I actually won't be booking the honeymoon part of our trip probably for a few months because I want to wait and watch the airfares. If the airfare is ridiculous to go from Cayman (where our wedding will be) to Aruba, then it probably makes more sense to do Jamaica. BUT if we do Aruba, we will DEFINITELY be staying at the Hyatt. The hotel sounds amazing, and just the sort of thing my fiance and I would like for our honeymoon...somewhere fun on the beach with a great pool, good restaurants, and within walking distance of plenty of other things. The island of Aruba itself sounds fun, my only condern (besides the expensive airfare) is that I don't want to have a duplicate of our wedding week on Cayman, which is why Jamaica sounds good. I's like to experience 2 different destinations. BUT there are plenty of future trips to enjoy the rest of the islands! And even though Cayman and Aruba are criticized here sometimes for being too touristy, they both sound like fun and also, at least for Cayman, we have to think of a place where our families will be comfortable.
When you have a sec, let me know about the Hyatt and the island itself! I would love to hear from someone who's stayed there. What room category would you recommend? And is the hotel overrun with kids?

Also, I wanted to mention to others that although we are thinking Aruba or Jamaica right now, if anyone else has an idea that would fit our criteria and would be relatively easy (no more then 1 connection) to get to from GC, I would be willing to hear your ideas!

How about the British Virgin Islands? I almost chose there instead of Cayman.

Hi Honeymooner,

I will be seeing quite a bit of Jamaica in January and will give you a very honest report when I get back. I just read a story "High on Jamaica" featured in the Natural Geographic Traveler Magazine in 2001. You can view it under articles under Jamaica on Tripadvisor.com.

Are you able to fly to Grenada with one connection?

Also, I found Frommers Caribbean 2003 guide a good reference for learning more about the islands.

Best of luck,

Holly

Wow, I have just found these forums and am overwhelmed with the number and quality of postings re Cayman.

Anyway, disclaimer first, I run The Reef Resort in Cayman, so watch out, I may be biased.

Anyway, have just skim read through this thread (will catch up more tomorrow night, getting late tonight), but Aruba is a long, long way from Cayman, whereas Montego Bay is only a short non-stop flight.

Having said that, airfare for 2 is about US$600 from Cayman to MoBay return, so even if Cayman is slightly more expensive than Jamaica (and that is questionable, if you make good choices in Cayman at least!), that US$600 in flights, plus the vacation time wasted in getting to and from Jamaica, surely makes it worth considering staying in CAyman for your honeymoon ?

Just a thought....
