Ferry from St. Martin to St. Barth
Going to St. Martin for a weekend (5/3/02)then leaving on Sunday for a week in St. Barth. My husband and I are thinking of taking the ferry to/from St. Barth instead of flying. Can anyone give me any advice? Thank you!
Hi Susan,
My husband and I have been going to St. Barths once or twice a year for more than 16 years. We have always taken the 10 minute flight on the 16 seater plane and it's fast, easy and a breeze. Once we took the ferry, for a change and I can say, never again. It's 90 minutes and quite rough as well as "roughing it". You'll have no trouble flying. It's safe, easy and the flights are plentiful from St. Maarten. Email me if you have any St. Barths questions.

Take the ferry it only takes an hour.THEY EVEN GIVE YOU RUM PUNCH.The plane ride will scare the living shit at of you while the boat will only get you a little nautious.

The plane ride isn't THAT bad. Try it in a six seater. I don't think it's any different than the ride/landings on the surrounding islands. It certainly beats the landing on Saba.

Susan,
The plane ride into St. Barth is not that bad, we flew a small plane that held approx. 16/20 people and it only took approx. 15 minutes. It was not very rough, the approach to the runway just clears a ridge top, and it is an experience in itself, and when you look back and watch other flights come in it is awesome. Hope this helps.

Thank you all for your insight. Looks
like I'll be on the plane!!!!

Last Tuesday our flight to St. Barts from St. Maarten was cancelled due to high winds, so we opted to take the ferry rather than spend a night in St Maarten. Fortunately, one of our fellow travelers knew that there was a 6:15 ferry from Marigot so we were able to make it in time -- with time enough to spare for a trip to the pharmacie for motion sickness pills (placebo effect?) and an ice cream cone.

Despite the high winds the crossing wasn't as bad as I would have imagined. It took 1.5 hours, much of it in the dark. We sat outside for the fresh air and managed to get sprayed pretty thoroughly, but it was quite an adventure.

All in all, though we wouldn't choose to do the ferry again, it was great to have the option in this case and we were glad to be able to lay our heads down in St. Barts on the first night of our vacation.
