February Trip
My husband and I are going to Grand Cayman in Feb. We're scheduled to stay at Morritt's Club and Resort. From reading the posts we'll need to rent a jeep or car. For a couple that's never dived or snorkled before, where should we start? Thanks!

If you can swim, you can snorkel. I recommend you buy your own fins, mask and snorkel. We used diversdirect.com and got some great stuff. They have several packages to choose from, including carry bags. If you want to dive, most people recommend you get your classroom work done before you go, and then finish up there. You can take a resort course for about $75 that will get you diving with an instructor. Eden Rock Diving in Georgetown is a good place because you can do the Devils Grotto right there as part of the course.

Check out Amazon.com. There is a book that you can download on the Cayman Islands. We took it with us on a laptop and used it constantly for snorkeling ideas. I think one of the author's names was Perlmutter.

TJ

Thanks TJ for the reply, your info was very helpful. Do you or anyone else know anything about the place that we're stating at.. it's the Morritt's Club and Resort? Thanks!

Teri:

Sorry, I've never been to that end of the island so I can't comment on Morritts.

If you need some other info feel free to ask, however.

Regards,

TJ

Terri:

I agree with TJ you should purchases your own snorkel equipment. You can find good sets pretty cheap. You will want to use them all the time.

If you are considering scuba you should try to take the classes before you go to Cayman just to make sure you like the feeling. And it will save precious vacation time. If you considered taking the resort courses, in my opinion if you are limited for time you get to experience more with taking a snorkel trip. You dont get the sensation of scuba but you also dont spend the day in the pool learing how to breathe. While snorkeling we saw so many beautiful fish, an eel, sting ray, coral and the like. It was the ebst day of my trip. Our friend who took the scuba resort course saw 1/10th of that.

There are so many great companies to snorkel with in Cayman and they are all pretty reasonable. I would recommend a smaller, but well known company to get more personalized attention if you have never been before. I have snorkeled with Bob Soto's and they were great. I have heard great things about Capt. Dexter as well. They have 1/2 and full day trips. And transportation is usually included with most companies.

I dont have an first hand knowledge of your accomadations but if you have any other questions dont hesitate to ask of e-mail without the xxx's.

juli

Teri,
You will need a car staying at Morritt's. It's about a 40 minute drive from the airport. I would suggest picking up some food from the grocery store and taking with you to the condo. Breakfast items, snacks etc. There's several groceries on your way to the East end. This will save you some money from eating out all the time. There's a restaurant on premises called "Davids's". It's pretty good. The resort itself is nice, just a little too large for my taste. It's on a very nice beach, and very private being on the east end away from 7MB. On Monday nights there's a local that plays music, his name is Lammie, make sure you catch his show! Very entertaining!! Next door at the Royal Reef, Barefoot Man now performs, not sure which nights though. Morritt's has different theme nights and tons of things to keep you busy during the day if you choose. There's a dive operator next door at Royal Reef. Check out the Lighthouse at Breakers for dinner and The Edge in Bodden Town. Both very good restaurants, and not far from where your staying. Make sure you take the Stingray Sandbar tour, one of the must do's on GC. You'll enjoy staying on the East end, just be sure to drive around and check out the rest of the island, and take your snorkel gear with you. There's many places to snorkel all over the island. Head up to Rum Point for a visit, 10 minutes from Morritt's. Good snorkeling, and there's a bar and restaurant there. The only downside to Morritt's is the timeshare people. They can be pushy!!! Hope this helps!
Sandy
