Favorites and Must-dos in St. Lucia

I am planning 7 night trip to St. Lucia in November and I'm looking for advice and tips. Any favorite beaches, restaurants, hikes that I should plan? I will be staying in Soufriere but would like to visit different areas of the island also. I don't plan to rent a vehicle based on the feedback of the islands poor road conditions. Any recommendations for transportation on the island? Thanks :)

My wife and I went a few years ago and absolutely had the best time. The people there were very helpful, very wonderful people. I would suggest renting a car at the airport and staying south if you like quiet, and North if you like it more Americanized. There is some neat stuff this way as well. We stayed at Ladera. It is pricey, so look for deals. It looks into the Caribbean between to volcanos, the Pitons. Sugar beach is a private beach at the bottom of the mountain between the Pitons that has some amazing snorkeling an scuba/snuba. You will have to find your way (not hard) through each coastal town to continue driving North to South. It is aprox. 2.5 hours. Crime is low there and the people want to help, but there are some shady areas. Just research each town as you adventure around. All this is up the West coast. The East coast I did not travel because we ran out of time. It is the Atlantic side and more primitive from what I was told. Check out the mineral baths and the mud baths in the Pitons. Great local food in Soufriere too. Enjoy!

I'm a huge Soufriere fan also. We stayed at http://www.fonddouxestate.com/ and loved it. We ate at smaller, family run restaurants recommended by our hosts as well as at the restaurant there. We used the taxis that the hotel called. Did the volcano and the hot springs, the hike at Tete Paul, and basically walked around the property which is a working plantation, full of flowers, fruit trees, and cocoa!

Thank you both for the feedback! I can't believe i hadn't responded. I'll be leaving in a few weeks and am ready to go tomorrow (not really, i haven't packed). I had decided to split the trip, half in Fond Doux and half in Anse Chastanet (I found a great deal). The driving on parts of the island sounds a little dicey so I think i'll stick with taxis etc. I love to hike, so I'm looking forward to seeing the island and then relaxing. Did you have the hotel arrange transportation to and from the airport?

We just asked at the airport for transportation to Fond Doux. Unfortunately, we flew in and out of the airport at Castries, a LONG drive from Soufriere. On the way back, we had the hotel arrange a driver. You will probably fly into the main International) airport at Vieux Fort, which is much closer. Have fun!!
