fajardo/san juan trip: rent a car?

My fiancee and I are going to PR for our honeymoon. We are flying into San Juan and going to Fajardo immediately, staying there three nights, and going back to San Juan for four nights. Our planned activities:
Rain forest near Fajardo, horse racing track, horseback riding on the beach, visit Old San Juan, hang on the beach one day in Fajardo and two days in San Juan.

Should we rent a car??? Thanks in advance for the advice. -- Tim

Fajardo is about 50 minutes from the airport. I do not know where you are staying Fajardo but if you pay for transportation to and form airport, it may be more cost efficient in the long run to rent a car. This would give you more flexiblity. I would say Yes to rent a car.

Tim,

Yes to the car. Whether you are at El Conquistador or the Fajardo Inn, you'll want to be able to go to El Yunque and Loquillo Beach and the horse track, as well as just poking around the east end of the island.
When you go back to San Juan, you'll want the car to a.) go to Isla Verde for the beach and the El San Juan Hotel and Metropole or Ajili Mojili to eat if you're staying in Old San Juan,
or b.) go to Old San Juan and the Bacardi factory and to Ajili Mojili to eat if you're staying in Isla Verde.
In any case you'll want a car to go to Camuy River Cave Park and to go to JoseJose, Pamela's, or Dragonfly to eat, and to Waterfront in the Pinones area east of Isla Verde for great seafood.
Get the car.

Thanks guys for replying; that was helpful. We are staying at Fajardo Inn and Ritz Carlton in San Juan, FYI. We will go ahead and rent a car. Again, thank you!

We are also going to P.R. staying in Fajardo in Nov. You mention horsebackriding on the beach. Is this close by? We are staying at El Conquistador. Thanks.

I was just going by my Fodor's PR book -- it lists several places to ride horses in PR. I have never been there, so that is really all I know.
