Eleuthera/Harbour Island

Thinking of splitting a vacation between The Cove Eleuthera and a resort on Harbour Island (not sure which one yet). How would I get from The Cove to Harbour Island and what would it cost? Also, has anyone actually stayed at Cartwrights Cottages and what do you think? I see alot of postings about it but if there have been any actual comments I haven't seen them. Thanks.

HI Fran, the Cove Eleuthera is located in the Northern section of Eleuthera. A day trip over to H.I. is a must see. To get there, you would drive to 3 mile dock (about 30 minutes away from the Cove and then hop in a 10 minute water taxi($10 r/t) and then rent a golf cart from Michael's Cycles for a good rate. The Pink Sands Beach is a major attraction for visitors to Eleuthera.Cartwright's Cottages are located in Tarpum Bay which is in South Eleuthera. Having stayed in them as well for a family reunion, they are very comfortable and quiet with easy access to beaches resturants and shops. There are several posts about the cottages although they may be older postings. Feel free to email me for more info on Eleuthera and have a great trip to the island. Doug

Fran,

If you can get a map of the Bahamas you will see Harbour Island just off the north east coast of Eleuthera.

Doug is right that it is about a 30 minute ride up Queens Highway (basically there is only 1 road on the island and it goes the entire length of the island). I would think the cost would be about $40 from the Cove to the dock for a water taxi and the cost is $3 or $4 pp each way. The Cove could tell you the exact amount. There are always taxis available, they all have CB radios in their cars and the resorts call that way for a cab.

Getting to the Cove you would have to fly into N. Eleuthera or Govenous Harbour. The Cove seemed to be about halfway between those airports. The nice thing about the trip up to Harbour Island is that you will go over the Glass Window Bridge, which is a very narrow (just 1 car width) and that's where the aqua of the leeward side of the island and the deep blue of the Atlantic come crashing together, very pretty views from there.

If you need suggestions on where to stay, please let me know and of course you might check out the Harbour Island/North Eleuthera website www.briland.com for more info and lots of pictures.

Hope this helps, have a great time on island.

tweedy

Has anyone stayed at The Cove Eleuthera recently?

Ann someone on the board stayed there very recently. You might try a search for Harbour Island or The Cove and see if those threads show up.

I have not stayed there, but have been by the resort several times. There are new owners and some rennovation that went on recently and I understand that it is nicer than ever. The food is very good and the rooms are spacious and nicely appointed.

To see Eleuthera you will have to rent a car. The island is 110 miles long with deserted beaches on both sides of the island. Not much to do on island, other than relax and of course water sports.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

tweedy
