El San Juan Hotel & Casino

We are staying there next week. Anyone been recently? Have any words of wisdom for us? I hear some rooms are good. Some are not. Some ppl say the lobby is amazing. Some say it's in need of updating.

But, the beach is suppose to be great and the pools are amazing. Is there a spa?

I've been to El San Juan numerous times. Last time was in early July. The property is (was) still undergoing renovation. The rooms in the main hotel have all been completed, I believe. The casitas (poolside rooms) and the garden lanais were not yet renovated. When I was there, they were doing construction on the Veranda restaurant - basically tearing it down and rebuilding it. This is where you would normally have the buffet breakfast - the restaurant is poolside, so there was quite a bit of noise coming from the demolition of the restaurant. That restaurant should be done by now.

The grounds are beautiful, as is the lobby. It does not need any "updating" but some people seem to think it is out of place in the Caribbean. I think it is very cool - all marble, chandeliers and mahogany. And now that Puerto Rico has prohibited smoking in most places, it is smoke-free. Although, there is an enclosed smoking room to the side of the lobby, in case you smoke either cigarettes or cigars.

The renovated rooms are nice but I think they made a mistake - too much white - the couch, the bedding, the floor. They are going to show signs of aging pretty quickly. But they are very modern looking.

The beach is the best in the San Juan area. It's a great walking beach but, again, some people do not like it because it is developed.

Thanks for the info!

Were the rooms in the hotel that are finished nice? The casitas sound fun but if they haven't been updated I guess you want to skip that right?

I've only been in the lobby and a restaurant and think it's just stunning! It would be out of place on an island like Grenada but San Juan is a large, fairly cosmopolitian city.

Yes, the renovated rooms are nice - in a modern, South Beach way. I've stayed in the casitas before but would not again until they are renovated. They are getting pretty dated and are very musty. I would stick with a room in the main hotel. If the garden lanais are finished, you may also want to ask to see one of those.
