Drivers license requirements?

I recently acquired an international drivers license which I was told would be good in St. Lucia. I've read in a couple places that you also need a local driving permit, as well. What's the story?

Some islands require you to buy a temporatry local permit - available from the rental agencies by showing your regular licence. I suspect you will still have to do this.

I've been getting temporary drivers permits on various islands over the years. But I just read somewhere that if you have an international drivers license you can forgo the repeated purchase of the temp permits. Can anyone confirm this? And how/where do I get an international drivers license?

Does anyone know if an international drivers license will allow me to avoid the local driving permit fees? I'm planning trips to Grand Cayman and Anguilla.

Even with an international permit, you still need a local temporary licence on most islands. Don't knock it, it's a major source of revenue for some hard-pressed economies.

Rob J,
I can't comment about Grand Cayman. On Anguilla, you will need to buy a local driving permit. Price was $20US as of January 2002.

International drivers license will NOT replace the requirement of a local driving permit on Anguilla.

We have been getting International Driving Permits for several years since we go to Grand Cayman 4-5 times a year. You do not need any additional permit there. We get the IDP at local AAA. There is a list of countries in which it is valid listed in the permit.

If you don't have an IDP, it costs $7.50 for a driving permit in Cayman.
