Drake's Anchorage
Has anyone been to Drake's Anchorage on Mosquito Island in Virgin Gorda? Is their beach on the Caribbean side? I fear too much boat traffic through the channel to make this a peaceful resort, although it sounds wonderful.

Carol,
I was at Biras Creek a few weeks ago and was out by Drake's Anchorage 4 times, although we didn't go ashore.
The resort is located toward the NE end of Mosquito, but facing North Sound (properly called Gorda Sound), but they do seem to have a beach (I suppose it's theirs--it's a ways from the resort) that is on the channel that opens Gorda Sound to Tortola, the Dogs, etc.
That beach looked quite inviting and I frankly doubt that the water traffic would be close enough to be a disruption. We went through on the ferry twice and at the distance we were from that beach, it was far enough to not be able to make out whether there were people there.
And, although it's the off-season, there was very little motor traffic on the Sound.
I've got a nautical chart of the area, but I can't put my hand on it at the moment. If you like I'll measure the distances for you between Mosquito and the Virgin Gorda mainland. Let me know if yo do.
Carol, now that I think about it (and ask my wife), Drake's Anchorage has a number of beaches. You should have no concern. I don't know how familiar you are with that end of Virgin Gorda, but the Sound is quite big. Even over at the marina at Bitter End Yacht Club the "noise" is not an issue.
I would be more concerned about catching Island Fever. That's a small island and unless you're doing the honeymoon thing, you might find yourself restless.
I suggest you ask what kind of launch or other transportation they have to take you across the sound to Gun Creek where the road into town ends. There you can rent a car and dash into Spanishtown for dinner at Little Dix or wherever.
In years past we have spent a week two times at Drake's Anchorage. You don't have to worry about boat traffic. There are many things that make it out of the ordinary. However, prices seems to have gone up and I don't know if they have been able to keep facilities up to snuff considering what they are asking. It is hard to keep a private Island going with extreme weather problems etc. At one time it was an out of ordinary value. If you like private islands also look at Guana Island at http://www.guana.com. We would pick it over Drake's Anchorage at the same price considering this is off season.
I've heard from many people that Drake's Anchorage has slipped. I would love to go to Biras Creek, but the prices are right up there. We've decided to pursue Anguilla instead.
Do you know of: Club Valtur,Coccoloba, Sonesta Beach, Malliouhana or Frangipani? These resorts offer package deals through GWV.

Carol
