Dominican Republic Vacation Advice

After looking at several suggestions for an anniversary trip, we decided on the DR. Some have suggested Punta Cana in the DR. Does anyone have any suggestions for a great All-inclusive that offers good food, some activities nearby, great beaches, romantic atmosphere, and a little less crowded or more private accommodations? We would like to relax in the sun, but also have fun exploring the island along with a little romantic features. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks.

Take a look at the Majestic Elegance...and upgrade to the Elegance Club. This all inclusive is a bit smaller. I would check in to getting a room in the first building by the ocean. The beach is great. White sand like flour. You can walk for miles. The bar in the lobby is great, they make a great drink. The restaurants are okay - just what you'd expect from any all inclusive. You can see pictures at www.oyster.com. They have a lot of pictures.

They may offer a tour to santo domingo. It is a long all day tour but full of history. As I recall unless it has changed it was not an island to explore on your own a tour would be best.

I always hear that about the Dominican Republic these days, that you can't go out on your own.

I was there twice, but it was a long time ago (in the 70's and 80's) and we went around just like you would on any other island, by rental car or bus. I was in Santo Domingo, Puerta Plata, and Sosua. I have friends who were there more recently rented a jeep and went all around.

I think the "can't explore on your own" idea is likely encouraged by resorts selling packaged trips.

That is always a possibility but on a huge bus and an apple tour we were almost in an accident. The driving was horrendous. We were in the Punta Cana area and it was also 12 years ago so much may have changed to encourage tourist. It was not a place I would have cared to drive in is all I am saying. To each his own.

I agree with Bella Claire. The Majestic Elegance or Majestic Colonial would be great choices. I'm not sure when you are planning to go but they are running specials for travel through Oct. 31, I believe. There's also a Hard Rock Hotel and Casino there, which has an all inclusive option.

Excellence Punta Cana is an adults only all inclusive with a wonderful beach and pool area. Food is also quite good for an AI.

As I mentioned earlier, my husband and I are planning on going to the DR the second week of November. I was wondering if anyone has ever stayed at the Occidental Grand Punta Cana, Grand Bahia Principe Bavaro, or Punta Cana Princess All Suites Resort & spa? Are any of these good places to stay? Also, someone recommended a place called Catalonia Gran Dominicus in La Ramona, DR. Is that a good place? Does it have a nice beach? Is it a good area of the DR? Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
