Hi, about the Dominican Republic. One one arrives in Santo Domingo- how far is it to the resort/beach areas? Is it a long trek?
What are the hospitals like there?

Dominican Republic has several beach/resort areas some a rather long distance ( 4 hour drive ) from Santo Domingo. What area were you interested in?

Why not land at one of the airports closer to the beach areas? Santo Domingo is not really close to the beaches.

Well, I have noticed very cheap airfares from JFK to Santo Domingo. are there flights from JFK to other parts of the Dominican Repub? what is the most efficient way to fly?

Fly into Punta Cana, you will be right in the beach area. Barely a 20 minute cab ride depending on your resort choice.

I would avoid SD if possible. Rough treatment at the airport by baggage handlers (" gimme 20 dollars"). Maybe its 30 by now. However I hear very good things about Punta Cana and La Romana.

AA has cheap fares to Puerto Plata on the north coast. You can fly into Santo Domingo & be relatively close to a few beach areas, Boca Chica & Juan Dolio, but I'd either look for fares to Puerto Plata or Punta Cana.

Even if you have to fly into Punta Cana or La Romana.. I would avoid Puerta Platta, my least favorite area of the D.R. Love S.D., but no beaches..
