DOMINICA - SUGGESTIONS??
 

I'm thinking about visiting the island of Dominica.
Any suggestions on lodging? Rain forest hikes?
I understand there are few accomodations on the
island and most are pretty modest so budget is not
an issue. Any other suggestions are appreciated.

In response to Dominica - I have been on 3 cruises this past year and found Dominica to be my absolute favorite port. The island is very non-commerical (which I like), but it is so lush and tropical. The people are friendly, but very poor. You have to remember, this is a third world contry. One half of the island is for the Carib indians. We found them to be friendly also. They make the best hand-made baskets. they are very inexpensive and well made. I bought a large one for $12.00. Anyway, we are constantly planning our next vacation, and i have include Dominica in our next cruise. We are going on the Statendam December 97, to the southern Caribbean. I hope you enjoy the island as much as I did.

Dominica is a Garden of Eden. Be sure to go to the Emerald Pool, where you can swim under a 50-ft. waterfall. Roseau, the busy capital, is still rather quaint. Public transportation (actually private minivan) is convenient, frequent, and inexpensive. As for places to stay, if you want to be IN the rainforest, Papillote Wilderness Retreat is wonderful; it's near Trafalgar Falls, and the restaurant is good. It's remote, so you'll need a car (or Jeep). In town, Fort Young Hotel is upscale and certainly convenient. Great water views, but no beach. Garraway Hotel, nearby, is more of a business hotel; it has the island's only elevator! Castaways Beach Resort, about 20 min. north of the capital is on one of Dominica's few beaches. Rooms were not particularly exciting when I was last there, but the location is good and there are things to do -- beach parties, tennis, etc. Plan to buy the beautiful Carib baskets -- now showing up in gift shops throughout the Caribbean at 2, 3, 4 times the price you'll find in Dominica. The grass mats -- from placemat size to room size -- are also good buys. Enjoy.

Indian River trip, About an hour for $10 look for Charly: he'll make bird out of palm leaves for the women.. Neat little trip. Yes the baskets a great and inexpensive. Some labor trouble around road construction recently.

I'd like to get some info about prices (accomodation, food, flight...) in Dominica and how to get there
