Dolphin at Waterlemon
 

OMG! I just returned from a trip from the Virgin Islands (US & British), and I just wanted to express my excitement over seeing a WILD DOLPHIN at Waterlemon Cay on St. John!! It was the most amazing experience! He/she just showed up one afternoon while we were on a mooring having some lunch and I immediately jumped in the water and swim with him/her for at least 45 minutes! Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Needless to say, wish I was back on St. John...I miss it terribly! It is so amazingly beautiful there! :)

How exciting to see a dolphin!

Some folks on another forum said they saw dolphins last week too at Waterlemon... right between the Cay and the shore.

Here are some pics (look at the 6th, 7th, and 8th pictures down)... one of the pictures shows someone swimming right next to one.

What an exciting opportunity! I would just love to be able to encounted a dolphin like that in the wild. Were you able to get any photographs? If so, please post them so we can all enjoy them. Congrats on experiencing a perfect, golden moment!

Great shots of the dolphins (Bottle nose?) swimming with people. When they're done feeding, often at night, they will occassionally come to people, on their own terms, to play during the daytime. Dolphins especially enjoy people going underwater and spinning around. They will imitate your exact actions. They also like to grab a snack (fish) now and then and show you its innards...with much pride. You need a strong stomach for that one. One woman snorkeler had a lot of metal screws and plates put in her knee and lower leg. A few dolphins used their echolocation (sonar) to "see" the plates, then ran back and got their buds to come and see it, too. They came back and she had six dolphins buzzing their sonar into her knee with much curiosity. They actually can get visual images of it all. Robert59

what a wonderful experience..to encounter dolphins in the wild..
It has happened to me a few times, most recently in Florida. I just got back from Florida and we took a boat trip on the Gulf side and the dolphins followed our boat and gave us quite a show.
I wish we could post pictures here because I got some fabulous shots.
This is the way to see dolphins, not in these swim with the dolphin programs where they are kept in captivity. A beautiful intelligent animal such as dolphins should never be in captivity IMHO.
