Does such an island exist?
 

HI all,

we're debating Mexico or Caribbean. If in the Caribbean, we would like some surfing, diving, 'jungle/rainforest' for really good birding, no heavy tourism, quaint town, spectacular landscapes.

Is there such such a one? I've been to the Cayman's ~10 times, but that was for different reasons.

It really sounds like you're describing Costa Rica.

Hi, I agree, but he has already been there so I'm nudging him to go back, but, are there any other options you think?

Maybe Puerto Rico? Rincon and then the rain forest? I've never been though.

I was thinking Puerto Rico as well (not having been to Costa Rica, which also came to mind). Rincon has the surfing, and there is the rain forest and birding at El Yunque (other side of the island, though). I don't know much about the diving in PR.

As compared to Grand Cayman, Puerto Rico is a pretty large island, so you might have to travel around to get what you are seeking -- it probably isn't all in one place. While there is "heavy tourism" in San Juan, the rest of the island is not so busy.

puerto rico & barbados are both known for great surfing. both would offer diving, although neither are the best available. the dry flat islands have the best diving.
both islands are also known for birding.
barbados would be good for riding bikes.
puerto rico has the rainforest - plus opportunity to do a bio-bay excursion.

I agree Puerto Rico has much to offer for you. If you are weary of Costa Rica, you might consider Panama. It is perfectly suited to your interests. Enjoy your trip!

Grenada has no real surfing - but has a huge rainforest which is great for hiking, mountain-biking, bird-watching and exploring and it is also famously known as the Diving Wreck of the Eastern Caribbean with the largest natural wreck - the Bianca C - also known as the 'Titanic of the Caribbean'. It is also one of the few islands that has remained a true, authentic Caribbean island - not as commercialised as some of its neighbours. It is one of the smaller islands, with very friendly and welcoming locals who will point you in the right direction for a great time. Grenada also has the world's first Underwater Sculpture Park which is great for snorkeling.

Puerto Rico most closely fits your requirements or perhaps Dominica (although I'm not sure about any surfing there).
