Do I need a car on St. Kitts?

Hi there, My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to St. Kitts in February. We will be staying at the Marriott resort for a week and are very excited. We just are not sure if we should rent a car. Or, are there are a lot of taxis around? We do want to see the beaches on the Caribbean Sea side of the island, and also check out some restaurants outside of resort. thanks for your advice!

We were recently on St. Kitts for 4 days without a car. Cabbed it everywhere, they are reliable and we thought reasonable. Especially the $8 USD trip into Basseterre which in our minds would've been quite the drive through the narrow streets on the other side of the road. The trip to Turtle Bay ($32 USD roundtrip) was scenic and our cab driver became our regular driver while we were there, finishing up our last day with a full circle tour of the island. (Ask for Aaron when you call the dispatcher!)

The Marriott is easily walkable to the Caribbean side (where we stayed). In fact, we walked that road several times for various reasons - restaurants, check out the casino, etc. An earlier post I made said we weren't too impressed with the Marriott due to its size and un-St. Kitts like look. I'm sure you will enjoy your stay if you like Marriotts though as it is quite large and attractive. Didn't seem too busy but we were there about 2 weeks before Christmas.

We never felt like we needed a car there.
