Hi again,

I've seen in the forum that most people do not recommend the AI.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some names of moderate-upscale places for dinners. We also enjoy a glass of wine, so if anyone knows of a good wine bar I would be very happy to hear about it!

Enjoy your time on Barbados! In answer to your previous post, yes, it's a good idea to rent a car while you're on Barbados. It's a big island and if you intend to see any of the great west coast hotels, restaurants and beaches, it will cost a lot of money for taxis.

For an unforgettable, romantic setting, check out The Cliff on the west coast. It's pricy, but it has hands down the most stunning outdoor atmosphere. Check out the Fodorite reviews for it. It also had a good wine list, as I recall.

I also like Carambola, which also has outdoor dining, but it's not as dramatic as The Cliff.

Brown Sugar near Bridgetown has great luncheon buffets with food the locals love. Dinners are also good--a casual garden setting makes for resreshing change from the swankier west coast dining spots.

Restaurant at Cobbler's Cove hotel is also very good with pretty good wine list. Beach front restaurant and very nice setting, though not as dramatic as previous two recommendations. They offer a 3-4 course prix fixe menu and an a la carte menu. Very good food in a moderate to expensive price range.

Should also give you caveat about wine in Caribbean, if you've never been to region before. It's very difficult to keep good red wine at a proper temperature without resorting to refrigeration at some stage, so be forewarned. The most upscale places will be better prepared for keeping red wine properly, but even so, they have no control over how the wine is kept before it gets into their hands, so it may have sat in the sun on the tarmac at the airport while customs forms were being filled out...that sort of thing.

I'm not sure about costs of wine in Norway, but compared to wine in the United States, it's very pricy in the Caribbean because of all of the import taxes and customs fees.

We just returned and had thought about renting a car. We took buses instead and enjoyed using them. Went all over the island with them and didn't have to contend with the very narrow and poor roads.
