ha! thanks. yes we have one night reserved in san juan, then three nights in vieques and one last night in san juan. now we are thinking to stick to plan b because plan a seems like we will be rushing around too much and worried about dropping car off etc. and the last day in san juan if we want we will rent a car and drive to el yunque then go out in san juan for dinner/dancing (our flight is at 3am!). phew. how far is el yunque from san juan?

Have not been there, but I think I remember reading it is perhaps a 30-45 min. drive.

Sorry, soggydollar, I just saw this. Mucho Gusto is on the same road and side of the street as the post office, but past the PO toward the water. Shaunaa's is on the "main drag" across the street from the bakery, Panaderia Vieques. Hope this helps!

Try to get to El Yunque early in the morning before the tour groups arrive. It's about 45mins to an hour from Old San Juan don't speed as many get caught and fined on that road! :(

if you had 6 dinners to eat in vieques where would you eat them and pay a reasonable amount?

For seafood and a casual atmosphere, I'd pick Tradewinds in Esperanza.

For burgers & lowkey fare I'd pick Bananas.

For cheap, good local fare I'd buy empanadas and a stuffed baked potato from street vendors near Sun Bay.

For a nice but more expensive meal out I'd pick Cafe Media Luna (other folks here have had less than stellar experiences here, admittedly) Isabel II.

1. Tradewinds on Friday night for lobster specials

2. Bananas for when you forget to make reservations

3. Island Steakhouse

4.-5. Chez Shack twice: Monday for live music and grill/buffet, and another night for the regular menu

6. Restaurant Bili (next to Bananas in Esperanza) for creative Caribbean fusion.

My opinion only and I have not eaten everywhere...
1. Chez Shack-Monday nights for the BBQ and live music(must make reservations or eat at the bar if you do not make reservations)

2.Mamasonga's-Now serving dinners on Tues eves with approx 4 specials ie: clam linguine(sp), shrimp stuffed lobster tail. The prices are more reasonable than some of the other places around. I have eaten there for lunch and it is great. The dinner night just started and people are loving it. They may be adding another night by the time you get here.

3. Tradewinds. Good food, great pina coladas, great atmosphere.

4.Mr. Sushi at the Palms was great, very fresh ingredients. On some nights they serve great tapas at the Palms Bar and BBH restaurant.

5. Pizza from the building across the street from the Green Store. In our opinion, the best pizza we have ever had!! Family run, kids and everyone working there. Plastic tables and chairs outside or take home. Only open at night.

You have got to try something from any of the roadside stands. Though most of them close up by dark. Stuffed and fried mashed potato balls, conch pastileos, tostones....

i see nobody has recommended dinner at inn on the blue horizon. i have made a reservation there the night we arrive at hacienda tamarindo because it will be late and we need to eat dinner. how is the food there?

soggydollar Feb 5th, 2007 01:59 PM

we tend to avoid the really pricey places. We looked at their menu last year while having a drink at the outdoor bar. Perhaps if you look at the website, they may have a menu, most of the places with links do.

Great to know that Cafe Mamasonga's is now serving dinner! They have spectacular breakfast as well.

soggydollar Feb 5th, 2007 02:27 PM

there are new owners now, but I think there is a huge emphasis on quality and customer service. I had the most awesome burger last weekend. It came with fries without the extra charge of the other prices for fries

soggydollar Feb 6th, 2007 01:45 AM

oops, I meant to say "places" instead of prices in the above post
