Destination Recommendation?
Hi,
We are planning a 5 day trip to the carribean in mid-late April. We keep going back to Vieques, since it's sleepy, there are empty beaches, and it's pretty easy to get there. Are there other locations anyone would recommend that are: 1. relatively affordable - not packaged deal prices, but also not tremendously expensive 2. easy to get to - since we only have a few days we don't want to spend too much time getting there from new york city 3. not mobbed by the spring break crowd - empty beaches, or places to explore that would be less crowded Thanks in advance for any recommendations. i have a feeling i might be going back to vieques for a 3rd time..... |
I started reading your post thinking that Vieques was the perfect place for you...and then I got to the last line.

Check out Abacos (elbow cay) in the bahama out islands. We did a 5 day trip last year from NJ. You take a connecting flight from West Palm (I think). You also have to take a ferry over to Elbow or Guanna but they run frequently. More of a hassle I am sure than Vieques but maybe worth it than going back there for a third time. The beaches are empty and the water is gorgeous. There aren't too many hotels. We stayed at Hopetown harbor lodge which is very basic. You could also rent a villa. Absolutely no spring breakers. I have not been to other out islands but many of them are very laid back and may suit your needs.

Out islands, ok yes! thanks for the recommendation. We love vieques, but i feel like it might be worthwhile to explore other parts of the carribean. Some recommended jamaica, but i'm not sure that's safe from the crowds, esp around spring break :)

I have two recommendations. Club Peace and Plenty on Great Exuma and Sibonne .www.sibonne.com on Providenciales Turks and Caicos. You can fly non stop from JFK to Provo on American. Think they have a Caribbean sale going on now so you can probably get a good deal. The apartment at Sibonne is probably booked but the two units below it might be available. Think they are called premier or executive suites.
