Currency/St. Martin
 

I am travelling to St. Martin in April with my family and am looking for any advise on the U.S. dollar versus Euro currency issue.<BR>I one better than the other.<BR>Thanks

We were there last year (going back again this summer) and noticed that the Euro was worth slightly more than the dollar, say, 1.10 vs. 1.00 Euro, something like that. (Of course this may have changed by now, I don't know.)

Correction: of course what I meant was 1.00 Euro vs. $ 1.10!

Although the Euro is the official currency on the French side and the Guilder on the Dutch, everywhere accepts US Dollars. In fact the practise seems to be to accept the Euro and the US dollar as equal, which makes things easier. Of course, thats ok if you're just paying for lunch, but if you're buying an expensive item I would work out the difference and the store will too.

Went at Christmas and am going back in 2 weeks. Since we stay on the French side we have taken francs and now euros. I usually take along a few $US but otherwise it's Amer Express travellers cheques and some cash in Eiros. At Christmas the rate was even 1$US =1 Euro. We live near the US border so I might use up leftover $'s and I am going to France in June so I can also use leftover Euros. I did notice at Christmas that several places gave us back US cash even though we paid in Euros and there were 2 places on the French side that would not take the tr cheques; said they had never seen Amer Express tr cheques in Euros. Don't know if this helps or further confuses; right now there's about $.10 difference in cost between Euros and $'s but that difference will quite like ly be reflected in SXM too. Are you spending most of your time on the French or the Dutch side?
