russel,

unfortunately for you, Cuba isn't really topless. I would say that maybe 1 out of 100 women maybe topless and even then only on the beach while sunning. I have never seen anyone actually get up and walk into the water from their chair without replacing their top. I don't think your wife would be arrested but I also don't think it is appreciated.

Russel - check out the Melia chain of resorts and in particular, the Melia Rio de Oro in Guardalavaca area just outside of Holguin. This is a 5 star resort with a beautiful stretch of private beach (about 600 metres). With it being a little more private then say Varadero Beach, a little toplessness won't necessarily offend or get you arrested.

Russel, we hate to add anything negative to your Cuba vacation but you should be aware. We were there in Dec.99 and thought we stayed at one of the better resorts, Beaches, not!. Granted the resort was in transition into part of the Sandals chain but was not completed. So point one, do your homework into resorts. Two, topless was the order of the day at that resort, beach or pool it didn't matter. Three, the sand fleas were very bad they even made up to the pool area. Bring bug spray. Cuba is very impoverished, but historic. The weather was good. We dove and did some tours so email us if you like.

Hola Sandi. I just came form de Mares in Dec. & had a wonderful time. I hope you do too. We were there for a week & hung out by both the pool & the beach & not once did we see anyone topless. Now I don't know whether that was because it wasn't allowed or because no one there was daring enough. I've heard it's acceptable in Cuba, but maybe someone else could give you more info.
Let me know how your trip goes. When are you going?
Anya
