We'll be on Sov-of-Seas same dates. Hope to see replies on this one! If snorkeling is our thing, is it better to book with island outfit or thru the excursions?!

It's much less expensive to go out on your own than to take the ship's excursions. If you can get to the ATlantis, go. It's a sight to behold. You can just take the ferry or a cab over to Paradise Island. You don't say what you like to do, so it's hard to tell you what to go see.

Thanks, Robert, for tip on New Providence snorkeling. Husband & I plan to bring our own gear and ENJOY ENJOY. Can you recommend a typical amount to "tip" to dive outfit at end of day? I'm kind of new to this whole thing. Thanks & looking forward to SOS cruise!

I went with Bahama Divers and tipped one young lad who took care of us all $10. That was because he took neat videos of us all while diving in the Lost Blue Hole, and scuba dove with my neophyte daughter who just completed her certification. He showed us spiny lobsters and huge crabs under overhangs, and all kinds of feather dusters, etc. By all means, snorkel near Cannonball Reef. A good idea is to look up dive operations on yahoo in Nasau, and they usually list their sites where they do snorkeling visits. It describes the type of scenes and reef creatures you'll run into. I believe the "Fish Hotel" is another neat snorkeling spot: so many fish seem to "check in" and none leaves. Goulding Cay is 10-30feet, and excellent for photos of reef fish. Many movies filmed amongst the reefs there. An amazing snorkeling trip is to the Caribe Breeze, a 200 foot oil tanker sunk last year, in 70 feet of water, but her superstructure reaches to within 15 feet of the surface. It's about a half mile off of Nassau's SW coast. Defiinately snorkel the Southwest Reef too; myriads of sea fan, star corals etc. and masses of schooling fish, beginning at only 5 feet of water! have fun Robert

Hi Sherry,
My husband and I cruised to Nassau in November 2 years ago. We spent an entire day on shore.
We rented a moped and rode from one end of the island to the other. It was a blast! We found an isolated beach area where we swam and just hung out for a while. The straw market was fun to stroll through also. Have a great time.

Hi Sherry,
We were on the Sovereign of the Seas in February. (We're 35 and 40) It's a nice ship but four days definately wasn't long enough! It's a very casual crowd - nice shorts, skirts, sundresses. The men wore nice shorts and shirts. I didn't see one tuxedo or sequined dress. Slacks were fine in the dining room. We couldn't tell you about the nightlife on board, we brought our 8 and 10 year olds along - but there was a casino, disco, a couple of bars - they all seemed to be busy as we went through. I agree about going to the Atlantis. We stayed there two years ago (again, with the kids!). It's absolutely stunning - my suggestion: walk through the hotel and "dig" this time, but on your next vacation, stay at the Atlantis for a week. You'll never want to leave. The private island (CocoCay) is pretty nice. When you get off the tender head straight to the beach, but then veer off to the right and keep walking... you'll finally get to a prettier, cleaner and LESS CROWDED beach. Drink a Coco Loco for me! Have a great time! Hubby and I are headed to Miami on Saturday for a 7 day cruise on the Explorer of the Seas! NO KIDS THIS TIME!!!!
I wrote a thank you for information, and then discovered that I was on the wrong letters,,again thanks for all the advise, from everyone,MapleMoon, we will see you snorkeling, but I think we'll wait for the private island, not quite as adventureous as to have our gear, Kim and Gail-Atlantis it is for a visit, and Trish,a moped for the day sounds good but then the secluded beach sounds even better, and of course shopping--and Laura consider at least one CocoLoco to have been drunk-- or is it I who will be drunk--whatever thanks again, and Mary let us know about the cruise

You can rent mopeds just about anywhere on PI or downtown Nassau. I would advise you not to rent one due to the danger. The drivers are not "moped friendly" ones and your risk of getting injured by drivers is high. Cruise ship passengers renting mopeds are occassionlly hit by speeding cars. I'd suggest riding around town in a taxi first, even renting a car and do some island exploring, to learn the roads, driving on the left hand side, etc. The Nassau guardian has often printed articles about the dangerous traffic and the high fatality rates. If you moped up and down Bay Street, you will breathe in exhaust fumes. If you do rent one, stick to residential neighborhoods with plenty of stop signs around the side streets. Robert

I forgot to tell you but you can rent mopeds right at the pier for about $27 for a half day plus about $4 for insurance. Helmets are mandatory and you must leave a deposit of about $10 at last count. I've been going to Nassau then the outer islands for 20 years, and haven't rented a moped yet. Actually, you can get anywhere without one. By the docks, you can take a local ferry over to PI for a couple bucks, and get a colorful guide along the way. don't need moped to get anywhere in town, with the taxi drivers and small buses which go everywhere. If you want to island explore the innards of New Providence, I suggest not doing it with a moped...rent a car due to the danger. Robert
Robert, thanks for the warnings on mopeds--are the taxi drivers in Nassau certified tour guides as they are on some of the other islands in the caribbean?? Also how about the tours by horse drawn carriages, are they worth it--thanks again

Glad you asked that question. Some are licensed, other are not. Only go with licensed taxi drivers, less you get ripped off.

Sherry; Go with licensed taxi cab drivers only, less you get ripped off. The horse drawn carriage rides were fun and informative. The driver we had knew mucho about the local building architecture and history, and added lots of additional information. Robert
