Cruise to Bermuda
 

Recently decided to opt for a cruise to Bermuda - Thinking about going on Royal Carribean; Song of America - Any info about this cruise line would be helpful!! Is a cruise to Bermuda worth it?!

My husband & I are going on a cruise this summer with
Celebrity cruise lines. I've heard that Royal
Carribean is also great, but the food is better on
Celebrity. Our travel agent talked us into the cruise
after we looked into staying 4 nights at a resort
hotel in bermuda. The cost was very high for 4
nights. For around the same amount we're going for
7 days instead and just about everything is included-
except for liquor,tips shore excursions, etc.

In 1992 my husband and I spent our honeymoon sailing to Bermuda with Royal Caribbean. Back then they took an older ship called the Nordic Prince. I have never sailed the Song of America, but a friend of mine who goes on lots and lots of cruises liked it. She also won't go with anyone now except RC. She's sailed Princess, Carnival etc. and just likes the way she's treated on RC cruises. We found the people working on the ship to be just great--especially in the dining room where they treated you really special. I think cruising to Bermuda is the most economical way to visit the island. Once you've paid for the cruise all your meals and hotel expenses are paid, and Bermuda can be quite expensive. However, it is one of the most beautiful places on earth with the pink sand beaches and the people are very friendly. We really enjoyed ourselves and can't wait to return! Have fun!

My husband and I did a cruise to Bermuda in Aug. 1995 on Song of America (RCCL). The convenience of the ship docking first in St. George and then in downtown Hamilton was great!! The night we were at St. George there was a block party and street show in the Town Square and the first night we were in Hamilton there was a block party in town. There are shops, pubs and restaurants in both locations.

One thing you should watch out for is when you use Celebrity, one of their ships (I think it is the Meredian) docks out at the Naval Yard (I heard the ship's draft is too deep and can't clear at St. George and Hamilton). The Naval Yard is not a good location for going into the towns of St. George and Hamilton (you will need transportation and taking a cab each time would be expensive--about $20). However, there are shops and restaurants at the Naval Yard.

There is no such thing as renting a car in Bermuda. Mopeds are available, but at the ship's tour seminar (be sure to go to this--you learn a lot) they strongly recommended against renting a moped for safety reasons. We used the public transportation system and for $20 each and we had unlimited bus and ferry service on Bermuda for three days. The people are very friendly and we felt safe taking the bus late at night.

Tobacco Beach is so picturesque, Horseshoe Beach beautiful with pink sand. We stopped at the perfume factory, Fort Catherine, caves, saw some Moongates, a bobby directing traffic in Hamilton, and a lighthouse. We went to a super evening club featuring the CocaCola 55-gal steel drum band. Somerset is beautiful and has the narrowest drawbridge in the world. We also took the bus out to the Naval Yards.

Got back from Bermuda Sunday, 6/22. Cruised on Song of America. RCCL is a great line. Horseshoe Bay is lovely. Went on glass bottom boat and flora/fauna tour out of Hamilton. Very nice and informative. Husband went deep sea fishing on tour and caught wahoo and tuna. Dockyard is nice 1/2 day trip. One day I just walked around town alone. Very safe and friendly, helpful people. Shopping abounds. Mostly expensive but some unique items can be found for
$20 or $25. Took a 3 1/2 hr. tour in Hamilton booked from the ship and it was excellent. Short of rain everyday, can;t imagine you having anything but a wonderful time. Bon Voyage.
