From Detroit, the cheapest we've gotten was about $450. And yes, January is a good time to go (beginning of the "dry" season and cooler, but still comfortable temps). Most flights are into San Jose. We headed right out and stayed about 20 minutes out of the city in Alajuela at Vista del Valle. From there we rented a car and drove to Arenal Volcano. We also explored the Manuel Antonia area with a lot in between. Here are a couple of websites to get you started:

If you go, you will have a lot of fun planning this trip. There are a lot of great trip reports on this board to read. Write back if you need any specific questions answered.

Cheers, Maggi
