Correct pronounciation of Caribbean

Is it ka-RIBB-bee-en or kara-BEE-en?

pp Jun 25th, 2002 10:45 AM

The former, not the latter.

TRAVELER Jun 25th, 2002 12:04 PM

I prefer the first but when I am in the islands the say it kara-BEE-en. Some say po-TA-tow some say po-Ta-toe. I don't think there is a "correct" pronouncitaion.

Both are correct. Just checked the Dictionary.

Susan Jun 26th, 2002 02:32 AM

Both are perfectly fine!

The first pronunciation will work as will Traveler's "kara-BEE-an".
There is a correct pronunciation and it would be the one used by the Caribbean people, no?

Being a Ca-RIB-be-an person who lives in the Ca-rib-BEAN. I want to say that we say it both ways. Hows that!
Ronnie

Thanks Ronnie!
Now we have it straight from the horse's mouth! :)
