Confused re Caribbean Resorts!

Help! I'm planning my honeymoon for April 2005 and looking at a number of resorts. We are not nightlife/casino people. We really enjoy snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, dining, general "exploring" and visiting historically interesting sites. Beach-bumming, shelling and general vegging-out are also priorities. I do not want to visit any place with safety issues. We like a place with character--not a mega-resort/golf/casino type place.

Initially, I was thinking the Golden Lemon in St. Kitts might be fun--but I read some postings on tripadvisor that related break-ins and other violence. So, my interests have since turned to Caneel Bay, Little Dix and the Peter Island Resort. People seemed to have given Caneel and Little Dix mixed reviews in terms of food, service and the condition of the rooms. However, the activities at Caneel seem awesome. I've heard that Peter Island is gorgeous--but I'm wondering if we'll grow bored from isolation.

To those of you who have visited some or all of these places, I'd really appreciate your two cents! I'm quite confused! Also, if you have any other suggestions, please let me know. THANKS IN ADVANCE!

I would agree that food and service at Caneel was not terrific, however you are 5-10 minutes away from Cruz Bay where there are many GREAT restaurants. St. John fits your preferences very well. It's a beautiful island and easy to explore, hike, snorkel, etc. You'll love it.

Cold in Cleveland,
For all you want look at Tobago, for crime its below par....theft you need to worry about as anywhere, never leave your belongings unattended the rule...though some remote places thats a hard rule to beleive. Another place you might consider is Bonaire, though no "beaches" per say....the few are grainy rocks/coral. The real draw of the island is the fantastic if not unbeatable diving/snorkeling. The island is very much Euro influenced, restaurants excellent. Crime is an issue there, theft you have to be extra mindful of.

Have you considered Bitter End Yacht Club - Virgin Gorda? There's snorkeling, sailing, boston whalers ...

MIG--Would you rent a jeep for the entire week, or would you just take cabs every time you go out? If you'd rent a jeep, who would you rent it from?

I would rent the 'jeep' for the entire week. Gives you the flexibility to go at your own schedule and, as I've said many times on this forum, St. John is a great place to explore by 'jeep'. Search the archives at USVI On-Line ( http://www.usvi-on-line.com/usviforum.html ) for rental company reports.
