Condos on Grand Cayman?

Hope to spend a week or two at Grand Cayman in January. Would like a unit where we could prepare a few of our own meals. Price is a consideration. Also, how important is it to be on seven mile beach if we want a beautiful beach and good snorkeling? We are are considering a place toward the other end of the island. Any advice will be appreciated.

We have stayed at the Villas of the Galleon 3 times and have it enjoyed it very much. I think the beach is one of the best on GC. There is also a grocery store just down the street that you can walk to. Unfortunately the snorkeling is not good off the Villa's beach, too sandy. The closest is probably the Cemetary, which is probably 2 or 3 miles down the road.

Dear Ray, Treasure Island Resort has condos, 1-800-999-1338,[email protected]. We stayed in hotel rooms here. There is a reef right off shore which we spent hours snorkeling over. If you want a sandy beach, walk down seven mile beach about 10 minutes. TI also has three wonderful pools and swim up bar. Grandview condos are right next door also and use TI facilities. Check out BEST DIVES OF THE CARIBBEAN by Joyce and Jon HUber for snorkeling sites. We also did Captain Marvin's all day snorkel trip to 2 reefs and stingray sandbar(don't miss this!) [email protected] We had a great time. E-mail me for more tips.

Steve, The Aqua Bay Condos are a very short walk down the beach from Cemetery Reef. We stayed at Silver Sands (right next door to Aqua Bay) in July and snorkeled there almost every day. Unless you are quite a hiker, I would suggest a car if you stay at this end of Seven Mile Beach - there's not really any grocery stores or restaurants that close, but we liked it that way. Aqua Bay looked fine from the outside, don't know about the rooms or anything. Hope you have as wonderful a time as we did!

I just posted this message to another bulletin board: <BR>Have a look at the new Turtle Nest Inn on Grand Cayman. We found it an excellent, unique and very affordable combination of hotel and condo. I believe that they also have 2 bedroom units that can sleep up to 6. More intimate and cosy, much less commercial than the 7-mile beach tourist strip, and a better beach and snorkeling than Treasure Island. Best snorkeling we experienced on the island, and very safe -- reef protected waters just off their beach. Beautiful and clean accommodations, superb personalised service, in an area that gave us a real feel of the native culture & lifestyle. (Didn't meet a single Caymanian around the touristy parts.) Their web site is at www.turtlenestinn.com but you'll be lucky to find availability during the high season. The inn is still a well-kept secret, but it was full when we were there, and that was during the low season!
