Concerns about Haiti?

My wife and I are considering a trip to Punta Cana but are concerned about the recent unrest in Haiti and the request for all Americans to evacuate. Since Haiti is on the same island we are considering other options now. Any thoughts?

We have just come back from the D.R....Haiti and their problems are way, way on the other side away from Punta Cana.. The only things the Dominicans are worried about is their economy. Itwould be right now as if there were a battle in Canada and you were going to visit NYC....or Miami...NO PROBLEM!! We have been to Punta Cana twice and this was our third trip to La Romana.. Go and enjoy the people of the D.R....No problems...

Punta Cana is extremely far from the border with Haiti and NONE of the travel warnings issued apply to the DR only to Haiti. They are completely separate countries.

I wouldn't worry about Haiti. If you'll note, Haitians will flee their country and try to get to the US rather then the DR. The DR border people would prevent them from even thinkin' 'bout crossing over to the DR! We're traveling to the DR in May of 2004 and we are not concerned about Haiti.

Just said on CNN that the D.R. has doubled its guards along the 250 mile border with Haiti.

I wouldn't worry - the D.R. is awesome -have a great time!
