Comparing Grand Cayman condo Avalon and Christopher Columbus
I have been researching condos for a winter trip to Grand Cayman. We are a family of four with two young teens. The two I like the best are a unit at Avalon and a redone unit at Christopher Columbus. There is a $200/nt difference between the two units and I am not sure its worth it. Avalon appears newer and closer in proximity to the Ritz and Westin. Is it that much more upscale? Are the beaches better for snorkeling in either spot? How about being able to walk to restaurants?

What makes the condos at the Avalon more upscale is not the proximity to the Westin because being closer to a hotel brings more people. What make the Avalon more upscale is that the condos in the Avalon are larger and more luxurious. The beach is front of the Avalon is larger and has less variation (due to storms) than Christopher Columbus. You can walk to more restaurants from the Avalon than Christoper Columbus, but I would recommend a rental car to get a better variety of restaurants. Snorkeling is better more north in front of Discovery Point ( next to Christopher Columbus) and a Cemetery beach a few hundred feet away from CC.

Seven Mile Beach is great the whole seven miles. There are a few restaurants within walking distance to the Westin and Ritz. The beaches are far less crowded up by Christopher Columbus and you're a short walk to Cemetery beach where the best snorkeling is.

We've been visiting Cayman for over 20 years. We have stayed at The Christopher Columbus, and have visited the Avalon.
The Avalon is definitely more upscale. The condos are likely to be larger and furnished to a higher standard.
The beach outside Avalon is better in that there is a fair amount of coral rubble in the water at the Northern end of Seven Mile Beach, which is where CC is located, I think the best stretch of beach is central SMB. However, the snorkelling tends to be better at the Northern end of SMB.
It is much easier to walk to restaurants and shops from Avalon. To the south side of the Avalon is The Great House condos, then Plantana condos, then the Governor's house, then the Westin. Across the road from the Westin is a small strip mall with several restaurants and shops, with Sunshine Suites further behind. Across the road from Governor's is another small mall with a few more cafes and shops.
If I stayed at CC, I would definitely want a car (or be prepared to catch the local buses), as there isn't anything in that stretch of beach except condos.
Only you can tell if the price difference is worth it. We stayed at CC for 2 weeks in high season, and the price difference for condos like the Avalon for 2 weeks was prohibitive. CC was absolutely fine for us. We always rent a car, so the distance from shops etc wasn't an issue for us.
Having said that, we are paying extra to stay at Plantana this summer.
