Christmas vacation
I am wondering if there's such a thing as an inexpensive vacation in the Caribbean during the Christmas break. We are 6 adults, coming from NYC, Boston and LA and we like to be active. Any thoughts about an off the beaten path location, inexpensive homes or large cabins to rent, i.e. ways to make it not break the bank, would be most appreciated.

You have to define "inexpensive" - terms like "not break the bank" are meaningless unless you tell us how "strong your bank" really is. Give us a dollar budget for airfare, accommodations and food and people here will make suggestions.
That said, Christmas break is perhaps the most expensive time of the year to visit the Caribbean and there are usually no bargains. Many resorts, hotels, rental villas, etc. have minimum stay requirements at that time of year which add to the cost. Remember too that places "off the beaten path" are often more difficult to get to and the added costs for airfares will have an adverse affect on your budget. Also, many secluded resorts or rental properties are often more expensive because getting supplies and services to that location is often very costly for the owner/operator and those added costs are passed on to the client. For startersLook at resorts or rental properties in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Cancun, Cozemel and Playa del Carmen - they are among the lest expensive destinations in the Caribbean. Other places which may fit your budget include Belize, Roatan, Costa Rica and Isla Mujeres. |
