Chakanaab Park/Tullum up and running?
We are heading soon to Cozumel and other places warm and were wondering if Chakanaab is back in business after the hurricane? How about Tulum?
|
Tulum is fine and was unaffected.
Chankanaab was heavily damaged. The tentative re-opening date is 12/20, but I don't imagine it will be anything like it was before as far as facilities go. |
If Chankanaab is not reopened by the time we arrive, what would you suggest for snorkeling and a day at the beach? (We have 2 teenage kids)
|
I would check into the Fury catamaran trip.
They can take you to the off-shore reefs that were not damaged since almost all of the inshore shallow coral reefs were badly affected. The snorkeling in Akumal close to Tulum is extremely good as well. (Yalku Lagoon). There are several good snorkel sites _like Puerto Morelos - along 307 down to Tulum including some neat cenotes to snorkel - inland sinkholes/sunken caves that are pretty neat. |
I second almost all of Diana's comments, but preferred the snorkeling in Akumal Bay to Yal-Ku.

I actually like Akumal Bay better than Yalku as well. It also depends a lot on the day you go.
Sometimes Yalku is amazing, other times the viz is bad and there's not much to see. The good thing about Akumal Bay is that you are almost guaranteed to see turtles. Yalku is a neat experience because of its uniqueness. Maybe there'll be time for both? :) |
