Cell Phone Use?
 

Hi! We are thinking of planning a trip to T&C and were wondering if verizon wireless cell phones would work while visiting. I tried to contact verizon and have not been able to get an answer. Thanks!!

I was there in december and my verizon wireless cell phone didnt work. My sister is there now and her AT&T wireless phone works - but I think it costs a ton to make a call down there. Even the locals who use a local carrier said service is about 25 cents per minute! Be aware too, making calls to the US is very expensive. Most hotels warn you of this though.

Thanks! We wanted to take it in case of an emergency (this is the first time we are leaving our infant daughter!) and some of the hotels we looked at advertised "no phones".

I believe T&C utilizes TDMA 850 and GSM 850. First I would check which technology your phone operates on and which frequency. If you have one of those listed above, then I think the next step would be to contact Verizon to activate international roaming service on your account, which is usually not automatic. I don't know what intl roaming plans Verizon offers but my ATT wireless service has a no monthly fee plan and roaming calls while in T&C (incoming, outgoing, local, intl) are all a flat rate of $1.69 a minute. Expensive but a nice option to have in case of emergencies.

Well, I checked the Verizon wireless website, and they don't seem to offer roaming service in the T&C:
