Cell Phone Use

Is there an easy and economical way to use my cell phone or possibly rent one? Was told I could purchase a sim card once in the Bahamas, T-Mobile provider. Any cheap way to stay in touch with the states while away? Can I receive calls from the states for reasonable fees?

Thanks.

See if you hotel offers free internet access. That's the cheapest way. Otherwise, you'll have to buy a sim card or rent a phone. Or you could see if your carrier offers international service.

So, you have to buy a $149 sim card to get a discount on your calls??

That's crazy unless you intend to do business in the bahamas and stay for an extended period of time.

I live in the Bahamas about 8 months of the year.. and use a $20 batelco sim with reloadable card for those who HAVE to call my cell.

If you're just going on vacation. Ask your carrier for international roaming. Make a few calls and turn the phone off the rest of the time (youre billed for missed calls going to voicemail if you don"t).. it will cost you only a few bucks and you can enjoy your vacation without of having your cell phone tethered to you.

BTW.. you need to have an UNLOCKED GSM phone in order to use a different sim card.

On our recent trip to the Bahamas we purchased a sim card at the Nassau airport ($75 card) so I could make calls much cheaper back to the states. We have an unlocked phone that we use for travel (purchased on ebay).

BEWARE of adding roaming to your phone, especially data roaming. Call your carrier and find out the details before you turn it on or you could be in for a shock when receiving your bill. $$$$

Thanks all for the info. I heard about buying the sim card once in the Bahamas, but for the price, don't need it that bad. Just thought if there was a real economical way I'd do it.

Just fyi, you can buy lower amounts. I was leaving Nassau for Cat Island and would not have had an opportunity to refill it if needed.

BTW, our cell bill came..........
DIGITAL ROAMING costs a FORTUNE!!! We had a comma in our bill.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Turn your digital roaming OFF before you leave the US. We are very sorry we didn't.
