cell phone usage

Heading to Negril next month, and was wondering if my cell phone will work to make calls from Jamaica to USA. My carrier is Verizon.

I have seen several postings on this at www.negril.com. Mostly they say that if you get through it is very expensive. There are other options- rent a cell phone there or use a calling card bought there (not here). Try checking the message board there to see what others have done.

Rent a Digicell phone at MoBay airport when you arrive. US$200 refundable deposit and mandatory min.spend of US$50/week in calls. Verizon probably does NOT work on island.

I'm from NJ with Verizon service...my phone did not work in MoBay.

You can either get a GSM phone (not Tri-mode as used in the US) from Verizon for the trip, or you can rent one once you get to Jamaica. Not sure what the rates are though.

I don't use Verizon, but my AT&T service worked fine at Couples Negril.

Know anyone with at&t service that would loan you their phone?

Last time we were there the Digicel store in Kingston said they no longer rent cell phones. However, we bought 2 low end models with J$1000 cards for about US$50 each. Still have the phiones for next trip. They are relatively inexpensive for a quick call home or for local calling on the island.
