Cell Phone St. John? (I know, I know)
It's not for work, I promise! Just for 3 couples travelling together, but going our separate ways at times...we want to be able to keep in touch and meet up. Anyway, does anyone know if Verizon or Nextel has good cell coverage at St. John?

You can normally get a signal in and around the immediate Cruz Bay area....maybe a 1 mile radius. Outside of that....very spotty....STJ is a pretty "hilly" island, to put it lightly. You might have better success with some handheld two-way radios. We have a pair that works pretty well in STJ with a 6 mile radius. Have a great time....are you guys renting a villa?

Not a bad idea, we have some already. Yes, we're renting Argonauta.

Have heard and read nothing but fantastic reviews of the place! Enjoy your stay!

Hi mauimarti, caribsoul is accurate. Cell phone service (I have Verizon) is spotty at best on STJ. Not so bad right in Cruz Bay but lousy and unreliable everywhere else. I had practically no signal at all at the villa we rented out past Coral Bay.
Have a great trip!! |
With Verizon you need to have visible sight of St Thomas in order to make a call. That is the closest cell tower. We tried several other places and we got nothing.

Sprint PCS coverage worked while were sailed near St. John in the channel btw St. John and Tortola. I can't tell you much else, but if it worked there then it will probably work when on the island.

thanks everyone! Hope to be posting a glowing trip report in a couple of weeks!

OK, I'm back...trip report under "just came back from st. john".
Nextel does not work AT ALL on St. Thomas or St. John. Verizon was spotty, AT&T and Cingular works great everywhere according to the locals. |
