Cayman Dollars

I have read on various sites that the Cayman dollar is the official currency of the Caymans but that the US dollar is accepted also. For those of you who have been there, which currency did you use? Keeping in mind the exchange rate of course, can you tip in US dollars?

I think we did everything in U.S. dollars. I think all the prices in the gift shops were in U.S. and I even went to a bank (The Royal Canadian I believe?) and was able to take out money in U.S. dollars. I think I even bought gas with U.S. dollars. The Cayman dollar is worth more than the U.S. dollar, so if you are buying anything on a credit card, make sure you know which currency is being used.

Cayman money is very pretty and makes nice souveniers, but I don't think we ever needed it.

We were there last May and paid in nothing but U.S. currency. Believe me, it's widely accepted.

I LOVED Cayman, but it was quite pricey. Remember your U.S. dollar is only worth about .80 in Cayman money.

Besides that... It was AWESOME!! Have fun!!!!

Most places-including ATM machines, accept both.
I started out using U.S. dollars but couldn't take giving them a $20 and getting $9 back for a coffee an crescent. So I switched to Cayman dollars. Psychological I guess. $1 Cayman meant I gave them $1 Cayman. One caviat if you do use Cayman money--it is virtually useless anywhere else and impossible to find a place to exchange it once your back home. So, either stick with U.S. money, or remember to exchange it back to U.S. money before you come back. Otherwise, it makes a pretty souvenier.

You'll typically get change in Cayman dollars. Buy you can convert back before you leave though if you want. But take a few bucks home...their money is very pretty.

Thanks so much for your responses. That definitely answered my question. We have been to Turks and Caicos many times but this is our first trip to the Caymans and are looking forward to it.
