Catamaran in BVI Bareboat 12 nights
Hey there - well - the time has finally come! We leave for our 20 year anniversary trip on Thursday! We are flying from LAX - PHL - STT Saint Thomas - we land in St. Thomas at 2:00 pm and need to catch the ferry over to Tortola -
Is the ferry dock close to the airport? From our research and the company who we are renting from said "it is super easy"... any feedback on that? :) Told to take Smith Ferry to Road Town - we have a hotel for that evening in road town and then go to hodges creek marina... My husband has charted the course etc one thing that he mentioned is the "Full moon" party on April 22.. he knows I am not much of a partier but said it could be fun to experience? Thoughts? Thanks! |
Ferry dock is about a 10 to 15 minute ride from airport - get a taxi as you exit the airport terminal. Yes, it is easy - once at the dock just buy your ticket and board the ferry.
Full moon party is just an excuse for people to drink and listen to loud music way into the wee hours of the morning. |
roamsaround that sounds like not much fun - blech.

It's only fun if you happen to like that kind of stuff. I avoid that event like the plague.

Have a great trip, Momdd. I've been to St Thomas just once and too long ago to say anything helpful... except...
HAVE A GREAT TRIP! Sounds very exciting!!! |
Just a note to point out that if you are going to the Full Moon party at Bomba's (the most famous), you won't be anchoring off the beach there, but will anchor elsewhere and cab back and forth.
I think there is a full moon party at Trellis Bay (near the airport). You can anchor in Trellis Bay, and this event is supposed to be more family friendly than the one at Bomba's. As for ferries from St. Thomas to Tortola, take the one that is most convenient time-wise, and don't buy a round trip. That way, you aren't tied to one operator and can take the most convenient one back. Also, they used to (and still may) make everyone get off the ferry at Soper's Hole/West End, collect their bags, and clear customs and immigration; if you are going on to Roadtown, you get back on. As a practical matter, you will end up getting to Roadtown at the same time whether you take the continuing ferry, or whether you catch a cab in West End and ride over. |
Roamsaround...not my thing... thanks for the insight!
Suze - thank you! I am SO excited... last time we went on vacation together for more than a few nights was in 2014 and I ended up in the hospital in Cabo for gallbladder on the first night and it was a ruined vacation! We are really looking forward to it... leaving tomorrow night! waahooooo!! Calliloo - thank you for the information - that makes sense on the ferry to get a cab and go to West end if we have to get off there... no one has mentioned that detail so thank you :) |
I will wish you better luck (MUCH BETTER LUCK) this trip. You may not even see this note before you go... enjoy!!!

Hi Momdd. Sorry, I'm just seeing your post. If you see this during your trip don't be afraid to go to the Full Moon Party at Trellis Bay (near the airport). It's very family friendly and nothing like the Full Moon Party at Bomba's. We went to the Trellis Bay party a couple of years ago. It's very tame. Honestly, it wasn't that fun. I would much rather have spent the evening listening to live music at one of the restaurants in Cane Garden Bay.

Hey all!
We are back.... it was truly a magical amazing trip and I hope we get to return to do it again - at times it was the sail of two idiots :) but we had so so much fun... we did not end up going to the Full Moon Party at Trellis Bay (we moored that night in Marina Cay ) but it was a rainy day/night with thunder and lightening... pouring down ...so we stayed in :) |
