Jeanne,
There's an excellent post on this board titled "Traveling with lots of kids... "for lots of good points against taking very young children to the Caribbean as well as lots of suggestions to consider if you are determined to take them along.
Definitely choose someplace that specializes in catering to children or maybe take a Disney cruise.

I thought La Cabana Resort in Aruba was good for families. Condo style accommodations and lots to do. www.LaCabana.com. If your children like the beach and pool they will have a great time.

Jeanne,
I would say that Grand Cayman & Aruba are 2 pretty good places for families.
We've also taken our children to St. Thomas & had a nice time.
This Sept. we're all( wife & 2 children ages 2 & 3 1/2 as well as my parents) going on an incentive trip I earned to the Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas, so I'll post a trip report when I get back.
Also going to St. Barts this Thanksgiving with our children.

You might want to consider Isla Mujeres. It is a small island about 10 miles from Cancun. Laid back--great beachs for kids--very safe--cheap--and a good place for your 4 year old to interact with local and European children. We have a 16 page brouchure on the Island and surrounds that we can e-mail you if you request. dan and ginny
