Caribean vacation with kids - advice

We are thinking of a week's vacation at the end of June and need advice on the best caribbean island to visit with kids; ages 11, 6, and 3. What's the friendliest island for kids with reasonable accommodations and beautiful beaches? We are considering Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Aruba and Bermuda.

Lived 9 years in the Caribbean while raising a family (worked for Canadian bank). I lived in Aruba, St. Maarten, Tortola BVI and St. Croix USVI. I'd forget PR and Bahamas for safety reasons. Aruba (Holiday Inn offers incentives w/kids) is great for no hurricanes, great beach and watersports, and fun for adults at night (shows & casinos). Don't know Bermuda, but my sister vacations there regularly with her two boys (9 and 12 yrs). Aside from Aruba, I'd recommend Turks & Caicos - but it will cost more. Have fun!

yazlin,

I've lived in Puerto Rico on the West Coast for over 13 years and I think it is just great for families with children! When my friends ask my advice as to San Juan , I always tell them to check out the West Coast for family vacation rentals as they are economical, fun, something for everyone to do. By the way as far as safe I haven't locked my doors since I moved here!!

I don't know what the best place for kids would be but I wouldn't rule out Puerto Rico for "safety reasons." I'm not sure what Itchy_Feet means but I've been there numerous times and have never felt unsafe and would feel comfortable taking kids there.

In response to the statement that Puerto Rico is not a safe place to visit:

I don't know where this person got his or her information or what type of situation he or she may have found himself in, but Puerto Rico is definetly a safe place to take children.

I moved to PR from the U.S. because this is a good place to raise children. Anywhere away from the metropolitan area is safe. The Metro area is like any other Metro area in the U.S. It has it's good neighborhoods and it's bad. The areas are well lit, police are available and most crimes are either drug related or domestic within the people themselves.

Just like any other travel destination, problems may arise if you leave your car unlocked at a beach and items are highly visible. But you don't have to worry about being mugged.

You will never hear about problems with tourists vacationing here. The people here are friendly when spoken to nicely and often out of their way to help one find solutions to common travel problems.

Take it from someone who has raised a 21yr old and is now raising a 7 & 9 yr old. My children did not speak spanish when they moved here and have adjusted very well in school and every where else. Out on the west coast we don't have to worry about locking our doors and windows. We can leave our bicycles in the front yard and not have to worry about theft.

I wouldn't trade that for any town in the U.S.
