Caribbean or Mexico? Looking for spring break suggestions...

My husband and I will be traveling with our 2 teenage daughters (14/16) the first week of April. We are debating the Caribbean and Mexico. I am looking for suggestions. We would like to be near the beach and are interested in learning to surf, dive and generally want to relax and have fun. Suggestions??

If you're serious about diving, I'd recommend doing the class work at home before you leave. You can then do your check out dives in the warm waters of the Caribbean. You don't want to spend your vacation hours studying.....

for surfing look at rincon on puerto rico and barbados. good diving in mexico, turks & caicos, grand cayman, bonnaire & bvi's.
lots of great resorts (many ai's) on maya riviera coast south of cancun. if you stay in a mid or higher priced resort you will avoid spring breakers altogether.
t&c might still be a tad cool in april. barbados would be great. stay on the west side for great swimming/hanging out beaches & surf on the east side. plenty of dining options & plenty of other activities.

Sheez (qwovadis) Cancun is hardly the only place they could go in Mexico.

Anywhere along the Mayan Riviera coastline (outside Cancun heading to the south) would work for what you request.

As far as the Caribbean, I'd sort it out by which islands have surfing and diving available, if that is a priority.

Would you consider Hawaii?

Why would you even consider Mexico? Which area? Crossing the border isn't safe.

gr8_fun Sep 23rd, 2011 06:41 PM

I second the HAWAII vote.

gr8-fun. what an absurd comment.

Mexico is perfectly fine to visit in the tourist areas, which I assume is where they are heading since they mention beach, relaxing, surfing, and having fun. They are not involved in the problems you hear in the news about certain border towns or cities like Juarez.

Most people FLY they aren't "crossing the border" by land anyways.

I only mentioned Hawaii because of the surfing and learning to dive request.

Just so you know, surfing and diving on the same island are hard to come by. Usually if there is surf, there's no good snorkeling.

The islands known for good scuba are Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos, Caymans, Bonaire Andros in the Bahamas and Mexico

Surf islands I would say probably Barbados, puerto Rico. Tortola has some beaches with waves but I've never seen surfers. Jaca in Costa Rica is a surfers dream.

You also want somewhere that will have other teens around to befriend yours. That narrows things down more.

Give a budget, put what you want in order of importance, well try to help you more.

Given that I am a fan of Grand Cayman, I would recommend renting condo. There are many diving companies that have small group dives. Seven Mile Beach is very nice. There are also many areas where you can snorkel. Also, Grand Cayman is safe.

Do you want a condo, resort, all inclusive, etc??????
Mexico is perfectly safe. I love the Riviera Maya area or Cozumel if you are into diving.
Several resorts in Mexico keep spring breakers out, but they would also require you to get two rooms since there will be four "adults" in your group.
