Caribbean in September??

Is late September a bad time to visit the Caribbean / Central America? We are looking for somewhere for our honeymoon and were thinking about Costa Rica, Belize or a cruise in the Caribbean until I heard that that time of year is rainy / hurricane season. Is it a bad idea to visit then?

That is hurricane season, and the wettest time of the year in the region. Rainfall is mostly in brief showers, unless there is a tropical wave/storm/hurricane nearby. Costa Rica is pretty hurricane-proof, but rainy at that time. The southern Caribbean, from Barbados on south to Grenada, T&T, ABC, only experience a major hurricane about once in 100 years (Ivan in Grenada on 9-7-04). Even so, the odds of having a hurricane hit a given island in a given week are quite small. If you want to go anyway, trip insurance might help you.

We've always gone in September. So far so good *knock on wood*. As xkenx said, the rain is pretty much just brief rainshowers.

We've gone in late August, September & October for the last 10 years and, knock on wood, we've never had a problem. Buy trip insurance if you worried about it.

And by trip insurance, we mean trip interruption/delay insurance. It won't compensate you if you simply have bad weather, but will reimburse you for any non-refundable costs you've lost as a result of bad weather, and any expenses you incur (lodging, food, etc.) as a result of a weather event. In all cases, be sure to read the fine print.

September can be a wonderful time to visit the Caribbean, but you should go into it with your eyes open.

It is definately hurricane season. However CR doesn;t seem to get many of those. I went to CR two years ago in Sept and it rained non stop. Howver you are in the rainforest. It did not stop us from doing anything. We did the canaopy tours, toured around the volcanoes, etc.. We still had a blast just bring a lot of clothes to change into

We've been to Mexico/Carribean 3 times in a Aug/Sept. We sweated out bad weather and hurricanes every time. Luckily we never got caught up in it, but it was a huge chance. We did lose out in 2005 to Hurricane Wilma and our vacation was cancelled. We did have the trip insurance and rescheduled to another destination and it rained non-stop the entire trip. We will not book any more vacations during that time frame unless the destination is outside of the hurricane belt. We went to Aruba in 2006 in a Sept. and the weather was perfect.
