A few months ago there was a thread on this board about people's favorite movies set in the Caribbean. <BR> <BR>How about your favorite NOVELS set in the Caribbean ? <BR> <BR>I recently read Michener's "Caribbean," which was informative, but next I'd like to try something, well, less Michener-ish. <BR> <BR>Any suggestions ? <BR> <BR> <BR> <BR> <BR>

"Don't Stop the Carnival" by Herman Wouk

Yes, "Don't Stop the Carnival" is a must. <BR> <BR>Also, "Wind from the Carolinas" by Jonathan Wilder, a fictionalized account of the settlement of the Exumas by Loyalists from South Carolina. <BR> <BR>"Sunfun Calypso" by Julian Putley, about the sailing charter business in the thinly-fictionalized islands of the "Tortugas" and their capital of "Roadstead." <BR> <BR>"Eccentric Neighborhoods" by Rosario Ferre, about a Puerto Rican family (this one is pretty literary, along the vein of Gabriel Garcie Marquez). <BR> <BR>"How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents" and "The Time of the Butterflies" (don't remember the exact names of the books or the author's name), about a Dominican family during and after the revolution.

Yes-Dont Stop the Carnival - one of the best. <BR>New book getting good reviews-A trip to The Beach-about staring a retaurant and living on Anguilla.

I just read a review a few hours ago about the book A Trip to the Beach in People mag. It sounds really good

Terry MacMillan's 'How Stella Got Her Groove Back' is partially set in Negril. She's the author of 'Waiting to Exhale.' It's a great beach book (not too heavy) and a fun read. I'd read it a few years ago and read it again after we got home from a Thanksgiving trip to Negril.

slightly off topic... <BR> <BR>After you read "Don't Stop the Carnival" go out and buy Jimmy Buffett's soundtrack CD to his now-defunct play he produced by the same name, in conjunction with Mr. Wouk. The music is fabulous and you will love it. The singing is by lots of different characters. Really gets you in da mood! <BR>Joan
